I'm running Ubuntu, and using the autopackage builds from the main inkscape site. Works fine. Did you tried to use the autopackages with Slack?

I use Slackware but Slack doesn't come with certain necessary libraries. So I am going to set up another partition just for Inkscape, Scribus etc. I can go Debian, Ubuntu, Mandriva, whatever. What distribution would be best for Inkscape 46, considering library requirements?
Hmmm, don't know about 0.46 but debian etch comes with both inkscape 0.45 and scribus 1.3.4 in the default deb packages. It also has abiword 2.4.6 if that is of any interest.
