I used to use A. Illustrator years ago before I used Linux. Ever since then I have been dissatisfied with the various Free vector drawing applications available for Linux. I just started using Inkscape yeterday and I am very impressed! There are keyboard shortcuts for most operations! The boolean operations (union, divide, etc) work! (The lack of such has been a major impediment to my use of other vector drawing applications.)
Great to see that you enjoy using it.
My only major problem so far has been that the selected object is difficult to see because the selection indicators do not contrast strongly with their object or follow their object's path outline.
Hmm, which version of Inkscape are you using. Bulia changed the selection markers so that they are complete inverses of what is under them - so they should be easier to see. I'm pretty sure this was in the 0.38 release.
Question: is there anything equivalent to wireframe view that shows object without fille and stroke?
Not currently.
Another question: is there anything analogous to the layer feature of the GIMP? I am interested in making certain object read-only and showing or hiding them on demand.
There will be preliminary support in the next release, but should have good support in the release after that. Right now, many of the underpinnings are there, but there isn't a user friendly way to use it. So, it's definitely in the works.

Also check the preferences... I seem to recall Bulia added options to change the contrasting behavior.
