Hi,
I'm reviewing the following Adobe Illustrator Logo tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxF7xXt5Oss
In it he uses a 3d tool to bend a rectangle around a cylinder. I was wondering if Inkscape has a similar tool / extension?
TIA, Ole
None that I've ever heard of. I seem to recall hearing the GIMP has a way to wrap an image over a sphere. But I don't' really know for sure.
Open source 3D modeling -- try Blender. From a few examples I've seen, it seems like it should be possible in Blender.

It might be worth noting that many such renderings are simple enough to do by hand with a little forethought. For example, the sides of the wrapped rectangle in the example used for the video are clipped sine waves, which can be generated using a Render extension in Inkscape. And you would probably have a lot less trouble than the maker of that video did regarding alignment of the individual pieces, and whatever set of ungrouping / breaking a path into components / removing clip masks that he had to do would not exist. -Arlo
Thanks Arlo - That seems like a pretty good approach. I found some more info here on how to generate a Double Helix in case anyone else is following: http://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/45064/drawing-a-double-heli...
Thanks again, Ole
