Hi list,
Could anybody tell me if there is a simple way to generate borders effect on an image done in Inkscape ?
I post an image (I generated with a Print Screen key) attached to express more clearly my doubt.

Then the standard answer is: you can't have real drop shadows until Inkscape will support SVG filters, but in the meantime a workaround is to enable the "Effects" menu and use "Blur Edge"

Say, how do you enable the "Effects" menu? Thanks.

Menu File | Inkscape configuration and than the last tab.
Here it is called other.
So you choose the option: Enable Script Effect (requeres restart) - EXPERIMENTA.
so is that.

I upgrade from Slackware 10.1 to Slackware 10.2 and stay on Inkscape cvs 20050907-2220 with enabled Filters menu. Now, some of them work, other not work - Drop Shadow work OK, bud Blur Edge not work for full. Effect Blur Edge create group of five objects (number of steps defined in effect dialog) but group is not visible I mean, I select group that I can see.
whats wrong there?

There are two ways. One way is to enable Effects menu and use Drop shadow script. The other one is to make your background white and put a half-trasparent gray copy of the object behind the object just a few pixels to the right and down.
Alexandre
Where to enable it ? I didn't find it now.
Sincerely

When I do all that (in GettingEffectsWorking) and try to apply an effect, they either do not work or I get a warning/error advice that says:
"The inkex.py module requires PyXML. Please download the latest version from http://pyxml.sourceforge.net/."
Should I do this and if so, where install and how apply?
Running 0.42 on WinXP.
Thanks and regards

Alex,
The Effects menu is enabled now. Thank you.
I didn't like those 2 ways because the limits of shadow have the same intensity on the borders if you understand me.
The only way I did nice was using your suggestion 2 plus Edit Gradient tool, but too complicated. CorelDraw have a easy tool to do that without many steps (just like Edit Gradient tool).
Thank you anyway.

Unfortunately, without a Blur filter, this is the best we can do so far.
Of course, you can export the image as PNG, open in GIMP, create a drop-shadow here and import it as bitmap in Inkscape, it would be a real shadow but not in vector format.

OMG, have you ever looked into Adobe's SVG file with a dropped shadow? :) It's just a bitmap with blurred edges.

No, I haven't looked into Adobe's SVG file with a dropped shadow, but I know Mozilla has on trunk support for rendering <feGaussianBlur> and I expect it will be the most used SVG viewer.

That is an export option for maximum compatibility. You can have it in SVG.

Search for Gaussian Blur in Filters menu
Or directly with drop-shadow. If not using a *very* recent version with the reorganized menu it should be in Script-Fu->Shadow->Drop Shadow
Very easy Nico. Thank you very mych.

You could find an example of a drop shadow filter and manuallly hack the XML which is what I've been tempted to do.
Perhaps one of the developers would consider hacking some experimental helper code in to allow users to apply dummy filters to make later hacking of the XML easier even if Inkscape itself will not be able to render the effects for a while?
Crazy idea I know but never hurts to suggest.

I did it two versions ago, see doc/inkscape-shadow.README
Hey...
Was just browsing some map-making threads, and thought about how I used to draw RPG maps when I was a kid. Using a bitmap editor (we're talking 20 years ago), I'd copy & paste map elements into an image from an area that had copies of all my shapes.
Anyway, I imagined a feature in inkscape where you could have a palette of SVG shapes/clipart that you could drag-off into your diagram, I guess this is much like Visio.
This could be something like an SVG thumbnail window with drag-support into inkscape. I'm imagining something that looks like Windows' "Character Picker", a regular grid with a thumbnail in each cell.
Map, Mathematical, Electrical and Logic symbols come to mind as useful 'palettes' of objects. Perhaps other things like fancy frames and curly arrows might be good too.
I guess if Inkscape already supported D&D from say Konqueror or Nautilus then it's a mute point. Although loading a set of shapes into a grid from 'cartography-symbols.tgz' would be useful.

Sure you can do this, here is my take on it: http://nicubunu.blogspot.com/2005/04/game-map-editing-finale.html
You can find also some already made elements: http://openclipart.org/cgi-bin/navigate/signs_and_symbols/map_symbols?page=9 Maybe this will tempt you to contribute some symbols to the library :D

Sure you can drag and drop from Nautilus, but here is another solution: the clipart browser - http://developer.berlios.de/projects/ocalhelper/ (will it come by default in 0.43?) from which you can also drag and drop in Inkscape.
A cool feature for game making would be (and I intend for some time to put in in the feature tracker) to have as an option hexagonal grid.

Probably more like [2].
I imagine it that you would make almost your whole diagram from piecing together bits from the palette of objects. (like building a circuit diagram, or flowchart)
