Hi all,
I need to bold some words in a text object. This works fine on Linux & Win, but under OSX (10.4.10 & X11) i can't even have bold in Verdana.
This Wiki FAQ looks related: wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ # 3.10 Inkscape does not see some of the fonts (Mac OSX)
but seems problematic (i use FireFox a lot).
Is there a way to overcome this issue? install some fonts in X11? or maybe compiling inkscape to run without X11?
thanks in advance, iuri

use camino ;)

You could convert the fonts to TTF as explained in the wiki (fondu, fontforge) and install them in an X11-only location such as ~/.fonts. You'll end up with some duplicates in Inkscape's font list but the TTF among those should display bold.
or maybe compiling inkscape to run without X11?
I'm affraid that won't help. The problem comes from Pango, the library Inkscape uses to get the font and font names, which does not like OS X dfont format. Compiling without X11 will render the font using either cairo or even the native OS X ATSUI system but the font names and faces will still be get through Pango and the same problems are likely to remain.
Hope that helps and sorry for the inconvinience. I have a script which uses fondu and fontforge to convert the fonts to their TTF variants. I'll try to package it in a nice drag and drop app and post it on the wiki, next to the FAQ sometime today or this week end.
Dear People,
Is there a good working SVG-Viewer for Windows? Firefox works, but is a bit clumpsy. Inkscape works, ofcourse, but is too heavy. Adobe SVG viewer simply does not work. I'd like something like the windows Fax and Picture viewer but then for SVG.

Maarten

I'm looking for the same thing on OS X by the way. Googled around a few times and found nothing. If someone is more lucky I'll be glad to hear it.
Maarten, Two suggestions. First. I find that Adobe SVG viewer works well. I just redownloaded it. Adobe's free SVG viewer plug-in, ASV 3.0. If you don't already have ASV installed, you can get the executable setup file, SVGVIEW.EXE, at the following Web site: www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/main.html
Install the plug-in by simply downloading and running SVGVIEW.EXE. The setup is quick and there are no options. I downloaded version 3.0.3 and it works fine.
Second.
The cave mapping program WALLS (Release B7) comes with an SVG map viewer, WALLS2D.EXE, that the program launches to view exported SVG map documents. Most of its functionality, however, requires the presence on your system of a recent version of MS Internet Explorer (preferably v5.5 or later) and also Adobes viewer. You can get WALLS at http://www.utexas.edu/tmm/sponsored_sites/tss/index.html.
I used these to look at a number of SVG files ranging in size up to 10MB and have no trouble with them.
As an aside the WALLS program uses SVG round tripping but that is another story.
hope these help. I use win2000.
cheers, Erik

hm - I am surprised that people aren't aware of Batik and Opera.
Those two are the most complete SVG implementations. And both work on all platforms. Batik requires a JRE, but this is usually installed on PCs anyway.
For larger files you need to assing more memory to Batik. I found that with every new JRE released from Sun, Batik runs better/faster.
There is also Webkit, which comes with an SVG viewer, but it doesn't implement animation and SVG fonts. Depending on what you need, Safari might work as well.

Dear People,
Thanks for all your answers so far. This is what I found out:
Adobe SVG Viewer works indeed, but only as a plugin in IE Batik (Squiggle) works very nicely, but the pciture disapears when I try to zoom in on it and I can't seem to pan. Neither is there a functionality to just jump to the next image. The Batik-slideshow doesn't start when I double-click. I must be missing something very obvious. Inkview: nothing happens when I double click it... :(
All thanks for your help so far!

I use inkview as my default program that opens SVG, if i want to edit, i just run with Inkscape...
i have also found another viewer that has the windows shell thumbnails implemented quite well... it is called the RENESIS PLAYER: ( http://www.examotion.com/ ) and it works really well for me under Vista Business...
However, it would be *nice* to have the thumbnail stuff implemented with inkscape, does anyone know where to start in writing a windows shell extention to get custom thumbnails working?

Thar Renesis player is great because is makes my SVG files display as thumbnails in XP! That makes my life already much easier. But, the browser does not scale images on demand. Clumsy if you design icons at 32x32 pixels.
So far in all your suggestions, I still haven't found a functionality where I can, -indeed-, just open a svg file and click on a arrow to see the next one in the directory.
It's good that all these options for viewing SVG's end up in single threat now.
Thanks!

In addition to a viewer, what I'd like is a decent SVG browser/explorer.
In particular, I'd like to navigate directory trees of SVG files and get thumbnail views of the entire directory at once.
Integration with the native directory explorer/navigator would be beneficial too.

How does one run inkview? When I click on inkview.exe from Windows Explorer, nothing happens, no process is listed in Task Manager.
Why isn't there a start menu entry for it?

Ah, the world has forgotten command lines :(
I would surmise that you open a command prompt, make sure inkview.exe is in your path, goto an svg file and inkview.exe somesvg.svg
You could also make an icon on your destop (shortcut to inkview.exe) and drop svg files onto it - that may work.

right-click on a SVG file, "open with...", browse for inkview.exe and check the box to always use it (I hope I remember well from the past Windows days).
You could also try using ImageMagick's viewer which handles svg files.
You can get the installer file for Windows at: http://imagemagick.org/script/binary-releases.php#windows
Then once it's installed you open up a command window and type 'imdisplay' and this runs a simple gui program which will let you view all kinds of images including svg files. Not entirely sure how well supported the svg format is. But it did open up various svg files on my XP machine here at work.
I've been browsing around looking for something for the past half hour and I have to say I'm appalled that there doesn't seem to be any file manager for XP that would give the same svg thumbnail capabilities as nautilus does in linux.
There are several other projects on the ImageMagick website that have gui interfaces to the ImageMagick commands so they might work as well. There are also a lot of projects to interface with ImageMagick for a lot of different languages too. I should quit playing around with Inkscape and scrape the rust of my python skills. ;)

Inkview is designed to launch from explorer via file associations, i.e. the file name passed as a parameter. Right click on an SVG file and open with inkview.

How does one run inkview? When I click on inkview.exe from Windows Explorer, nothing happens, no process is listed in Task Manager.
Why isn't there a start menu entry for it?
Thanks, greg.fenton

But then double-clicking the icon won't launch Inkscape....
And once Inkview runs against a single file, it will not navigate to other SVG files in that same directory. Selecting multiple files and choosing Open invokes Inkview multiple times (multiple single-image windows).
I wonder if there is some way to install a "thumbnail helper" app in Windows Explorer so that when it is in thumbnail mode that Inkview can be invoked to create icons from .svg files...

Is there a way to do these conversions in Windows? I find installing CygWin a bit "over the top" on my boss' computer... And Fondu is only for MAC. Is there anything out there that works in Windows?
Thanks in advance,
Maarten

Does the same bolding issue occur on windows? I thought that windows fonts were TTF, which pango should handle fine. If the problem occurs there also, it means that it is not tied to the dfont format OS X uses and changes things quite a bit.
No, I'm sorry for suggesting so, there are no "bold" issues in Windows, but A) not all the fonts are displayed either, and as I remember, that also was a font-file-format issue that could be solved by converting fonts from one format to the other B) I'd still like to create some fonts myself, preferably using the inkscape SVG I have. But that would just be a bonus.

I need to bold some words in a text object. This works fine on Linux & Win, but under OSX (10.4.10 & X11) i can't even have bold in Verdana.
This Wiki FAQ looks related: wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ # 3.10 Inkscape does not see some of the fonts (Mac OSX)
but seems problematic (i use FireFox a lot).
use camino ;)
Is there a way to overcome this issue? install some fonts in X11?
-- JiHO http://jo.irisson.free.fr/

Maybe this is worth adding to the FAQ?

There is already a FAQ about the font problem. Do you suggest that I add something about the rendering of fonts? I am afraid this is not part of the problem. Well I would need to test to be sure of course ;) but the problem seems fairly forward: we can't get correct font names/representations (this is the part where I guess it's Pango's fault) so no matter how we display them (this is the part where X11/no-X11 would make a difference) the problem will still be here.
FYI, the FAQ currently reads:
[edit] Inkscape does not see some of the fonts (Mac OSX) It is a problem in the way Pango (the lib Inkscape uses to manage fonts) handles .dfont (and some .suit) fonts. One solution is to convert everything to individual ttf files (Times.dfont becomes TimesRegular.ttf, TimesItalic.ttf, and so on) with fondu or/and fontforge (both are available via Fink, DarwinPorts or with standalone installers). Beware though: * you'll end up with duplicated fonts, you need to suppress or disable one version (the dfont one) * do not disable system fonts (if you need system fonts in TTF for X11 apps, put them in an X11 specific directory, such as ~/.fonts) * this can cause problems with Firefox which mozilla guys do not seem ready to solve soon because the problem seems unconsistent in its appearance

JiHO, Could this (bold/font issue) be addressed as a Bug for Pango (or Inkscape)? Or has it already been addressed?
iuri
For devel list: the discussion was about the bug which prevents some fonts to display their bold variants on OS X.

The bug is already filled for Inkscape. Don't know about Pango but since it is quite old I hope it went back to them. Gail worked a lot with Pango stuff for the summer of code. Gail do you know if they are aware of this issue and what is needed to solve it? Inkscape bug tracker will be moved to Launchpad soon. Once it's done, Launchpad will allow us to link our bugs to those of other projects, including Pango probably. Such issues will therefore be much easier to forward upstream if it's not already done.
