Re: [Inkscape-user] disappearing files
Jake,
I just realised what you described initially is not what I originally thought apologies for the confusion!!
As I understand it, you'd like to distribute each object with a specified width?
I'd have to say, there's been more than once I've actually wanted that feature too.
I think the only way I can think of doing that right now is to actually calculate the distances using the xy coordinates and width of the objects - there might be a script add on somewhere though, perhaps others on the list know of this feature then..
If any developers are on here listening I bet it would be a pretty simple feature to add in with the distribute pane though ;)

I do have the align and distribute panel, but I still don’t see how you can spread the object further apart or pull them together by maintaining equal distance between them. At least not very easily. But you might have to be patient with me, because again, I’m not very experienced in inkscape.

It is really good as is, but one additional feature I can think of may
be to spread out the elements to a specified width / height with equal distances between each other as an optional step after the alignment.****
Hi Jake,****
You can actually do this already in the "Align and Distribute pane". The "Distribute" part will put either an equal distance between objects' center, between the objects, or between the objects' outer or inner edges. Select all the objects you want to be distributed and choose one of the options :) Attached is a screenshot from my inkscape installation. If you don't have these in the Align and Distribute pane, perhaps your version of Inkscape is not current :)****
In terms of the file not showing up, I'm afraid I've never encountered that problem so perhaps someone else in the mailing list has..?****

Jake!
I just found another way to do the fixed distribution:
Use the "Rows and Columns" pane, and fiddle around there - you can make it so the objects get distributed as if they were the same size or not, and you can actually do a distribution vertically as well as horizontally at the same time. You can then space out the objects at predefined distances this way. Afterwards use the align pane to do baseline aligning or whatever else you need :)
