I want to select a segment, but I don't know how. I'm only able to select two nodes.

Unless your using a recent CVS you cant. That features only been added since after the release of 0.42

Well, not really. _Segment_ is not selectable, it's not an entity that we treat as a separate selectable thing. But in CVS you can select the two nodes of a path segment by clicking on it, and you can drag the segment to reshape it.
