Copy/Paste to Inkscape under Mac Leopard
Hello, For school i had to change from Windows to Mac. One of the problems I run unto is that i can't copy paste for example text from a word document (cmd+v) to Inkscape (ctrl+v, X11 based). Can someone give me some advice. If you're Dutch, you can answer in our mother tongue :D.
Thank you.

I'm not Dutch so I'll stick to English (I could offer German though) ;-)
If it isn't a typo (copy in OS X is cmd+c, not cmd+v), then the answer to your question depends on the X11/XQuartz version you have installed (see menubar 'X11 > About X11') and the OS X version as well (first item in the menubar 'Apple menu > About this Mac').
Background:
On Leopard there have been many changes and improvements regarding the clipboard <> pasteboard exchange with recent X11 versions. The latest X11 version installed with the OS X 10.5.7 update though lacks the localization files for the preferences, making it impossible to change any settings of the clipboard syncing feature if the OS X UI language is not English.
If your school still employs OS X Tiger, I'm not sure (never used Tiger myself) if there already exists a clipboard exchange feature between OS X applications and software running on its default X11 server.
If you tell us your X11/XQuartz version I (hope I) can provide more detailed advice.

oops - just re-read your subject line - sorry to have missed it before, it's Leopard as you already told...
all updates installed?

Well, it doesn´t help much, but:
Running a Leopard, I *AM* able to copy-paste between "something else" and Inkscape. It shouldn't make a difference, but have you tried right-clicking/control-clicking and choosing "copy" instead of using cmd-c? That helps sometimes in other situations.

Thanks for your reactions,
Maarten, yea, I've tried the right clicking method (Copy/Paste) in all possible ways. But Inkscape keeps saying that there is nothing on clipboard. Strange.
Suv, my mac has X11 version ehm.. XQuartz 2.1.6 (xorg-server 1.4.2-apple33) Is that an old version? Because my mac OS X is updated to version 10.5.8.
Also X11 programs as The Gimp can't work with copy pasting on this way.
I can remember that a few weeks ago I've searched the internet for alt funcionality in Inkscape Mac. That's working fine now (selecting layers under need layers). Maybe I messed up the X11 settings in order to use the alt button. Is that a possibility?

If you're having strange issues, there is a little gtk app I wrote to debug clipboard and drag-n-drop. It should be able to list what GTK+ sees, etc.
To get a clipboard dump, you might need to bring up the about screen. (A bit kludgy, but might help) http://sourceforge.net/projects/dragndrop/

Thanks for the tool - just wondering: it recognizes text that I copy in or drag and drop from Inkscape (r22148) on OS X 10.5.8, XQuartz 2.4.0, but when I copy a shape or path it adds content types to the clipboard use/name list but doesn't display any more information on the clipboard content.
Nor does it see text that has been synced (by XQuartz) from the OS X PASTEBOARD to the X11 clipboard i.e. I copy some text in TextEdit (with Cmd+C) and paste it in Inkscape (with Ctrl+V) when using the text tool to enter text. Dragndrop doesn't register any new clipboard contents in this case.
What am I missing?

No, that's what apple distributes at the moment. You can get newer versions from http://xquartz.macosforge.org/ though.
Could you please open the Preferences dialog for X11 and look if you have a tab called 'Pasteboard'? If this is missing, you need to install the Localization files from http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki#a10.5.7 (they got left out when Apple distributed the last update for X11).
If you have the Pasteboard preferences for X11 available, go to the Inkscape FAQ and adjust the syncing features as described: i.e.
[x] Enable syncing [ ] Update Pasteboard when CLIPBOARD changes [x] Update CLIPBOARD when Pasteboard changes [x] Update PRIMARY when Pasteboard changes [ ] Update Pasteboard immediately when new text is selected
Also X11 programs as The Gimp can't work with copy pasting on this way.

If you use a modified '~/.Xmodmap' file as explained in many forum comments it is very likely that you not only redefined the Option key to Alt but also swapped Command and Control? i.e. in X11 instead of crtl+v try cmd+v if this is the case.
If nothing works out, attach the '~/.Xmodmap' file you are currently using, and list your 'Input' settings in the X11 preferences dialog.

If CTRL and CMD have been swapped via xmodmap you need to uncheck [ ] Enable key equivalents under X11 in the X11 'Input' preferences tab, otherwise the cmd+c, cmd+v will never be received by any X11 application because the 'cmd' modifier key is first 'read' by osx for the menu bar keyboard shortcuts.

I meant of course to attach the file to your next reply to the list ;-)

Hey guys, Thanks for al your advice. Finally i've found a update for paste preference X11 settings at FAQ Inkscape Copy/pastehttp://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Copying_and_pasting_in_Inkscape_creates_pixellated_images_instead_of_copying_the_vector_objects. Now i can start making some flyers.
Thanks, Luc Buker
