Oh man. I figured it out once I examined the file you attached.
I was mistakenly setting the fill and stroke to "none" with the 'X" button, not UNsetting them with the "?" button in the Fill&Stroke dialog. It works as advertised now.
Silly mistake. Thanks for the help guys!

Heh! I discovered the value of "unset" when working with grouped objects. It is kind of wierd (as they draw in black, and I don't know if changing the unset representation is an option anywhere).
