Boolean intersection of bitmap and vector shape?
Is there some way to import a bitmap into Inkscape and then trim the bitmap to match some arbitrarily drawn shape?
I've tried doing a boolean 'intersection' between an imported bitmap and a closed curve object I've created to no avail. Do I have to trace the bitmap first?
Any hints or tips how best to do it would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, I'm experimenting with screencasting and have created a quick Inkscape screencast to try it out: ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfMDIK4uvV8)
there are 2 ways. 1 - convert it to a pattern fill, and apply it to the shape. 2 - Use the shape to clip the bitmap (Object - clip - set)
Cheers

Thanks! I knew there had to be a way, but I didn't think that there would be two! Or that they would be that simple.
Good stuff.

So why did Richard get an instant reply to his query and I've never got one to mine? I'd begun to wonder if this list was for developers only and no-one was interested in users at all.

No, this is definitely a list geared toward users. Two differences between your original message an Richard's stick out to me. Richard provided a clear relevant subject line and his question was prominent at the beginning of the message. I often quickly skim the users list looking for questions that I might be able to answer, if the question isn't obvious I'm sure to miss it. That's what happened in this case. I'm sorry I missed the questions in your message the first time.

Hi Phil,
Don't discount the simple fact that the answer to mine was likely much simpler than the answer to yours. ;)
Whether or not the simplicity of my question is directly correlated to my inkscape skill level is another matter entirely! :)

Got it in one. His question was generic, and something that i instantly knew an answer too. Yours was somewhat obscure (its not something I'd needed to change) quite possibly platform specific in details (the gtk stuff is subtly different from platform to platform, and OSX is not my thing - I'm win32 based) and it came at a point where there was a lot on my plate. You things I know, and are lucky with your timing, and you'll get the same swift response :)
Cheers

There is a separate developers list, so you are in the right place. However, people don't always have time to answer, simply might not know the answer or they may not understand you. So if you don't get an answer within a week or so, just try rephrasing your question. It's also generally a good idea to keep your e-mail as short and clear as possible.
BTW, I had a look at your original question, I think the text sizes have to do with GTK settings, but I'm no expert in that area and have no idea how to change those settings. The last thing you mention (size depends on stroke width) is more or less a case of "a feature, not a bug", although there is some discussion about this (see the bbox calculation thread from a few days ago).
