Johannes,

What you want to do is to use a Clippath. Instead of covering the part you don't want to be seen, draw a rectangle on top of the area you DO want to show (do it in the same layer), select both the group and the rectangle, and in the Object menu choose Clip>Set. This should achieve what you are looking for.
