suggest Pen tool set to reg bez curve mode for 0.92 stable

Hi Friends, I've just downloaded 0.92pre2(beta) 64-bit for Windows (exe installer) so I could dabble around to potentially submit something for the About Screen Contest. When I enabled the Pen/Bezier tool for the first time, it was automatically in BSplinePath mode. I suggest, for both the sanity of new users and the sanity of people who regularly help new users, that in the stable version it should instead be automatically set to Regular Bezier mode (or whatever the user had been using previously....although I don't think the tool mode is part of preferences.xml). I know that you probably want to promote interesting new features, but I'm afraid this would be seen as more of an annoyance, than promoting the new feature. This is one of the reasons that so many people are hestitant to upgrade their computer programs. Because the new versions *always* work differently, and people have to waste time trying to restore their program's previous behavior (or make their program look like it used to) (or sometimes they have to actually learn new things to be able to keep using it). Please don't make Inkscape upgrades more annoying than fun, and find a better way to promote new features. Maybe something like a What's New page on the website -- that's not the same thing as Release Notes, and only covers new features. I'd be glad to help write such a page. Or maybe *do* use the Release Notes page, and make a link from inside Inkscape to it....like maybe in the File menu or Help menu, have a What's New item. I'm sure there could be several options to promote new features without risking annoying users. And by the way developers, thanks for all the cool new features! Just don't force them on me ;-)
Thanks for listening, brynn

I have not been able to reproduce this problem using the 32 bit exe build from: https://inkscape.org/en/~eduard.braun/ As far as I know, this behavior is controlled by the preferences.xml file. Could you try running with an empty preferences file? You will need to either temporarily rename or delete the file at: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\preferences.xml If the behavior persists then I would suggest filing a bug report at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/
Thanks, Alvin

Hhm. Ok, so I closed Inkscape. Rename preferences.xml. Open the new 0.92pre2(beta).
Now the Pen tool does not show that it's in splineb mode (or whatever it is). Now it shows reguler Bezier mode.
However, if it was in the non-regular Bezier mode with my old preferences file, isn't there some chance that it will happen to others as well? I mean, that mode didn't exist before, so there must be some reason.
Maybe it was because I always use Straight Line mode, that caused it to automatically use spline b mode?
Thanks, brynn

problem confirmed using Inkscape 0.47, where the B-Spline mode did not exist. If I run Inkscape 0.47, choose straight-line mode for the Bezier pen, then take this preferences.xml file and run it with Inkscape 0.92, then in Inkscape 0.92 the program will start up with B-Spline mode selected for the Bezier pen.

Interesting!
I suspect I'm probably in a small minority, using straight line mode on a regular basis. So this probably won't affect very many people. So that's a relief. ....Although, I sometimes suggest using straight line mode in forum posts and tutorials where the subject is hand tracing raster images. But still, probably not many people will be affected. So I'm no longer worried about multiple complaints.
Thanks for testing, Alvin :-)

A solution might be to save a copy of old prefs file, and always write an up-to-date one when installing a newer version?
Not sure what the usual solution for this kind of problem is in other packages without having to resort to "configuration file has been modified, choose (K)eep/(R)eplace/view (D)iff/etc"
