a lot of stuff (pdf, guidelines, bitmaps..)
Hello all just registered at the list Been using Inkscape for a while now, and I like it, but there are some points I want to discuss:
- PDF export: the file size (in Mb) of the PDFs I export from Inkscape.
Comparing with other draw soft (like Corel), those PDFs created by Inkscape are _huge_. Why?
- Bitmap import: I seems to me that bitmaps are imported as if they were
72dpi, so if you have a 300dpi image, it comes very big. IMO, images should be imported with the size defined by the resolution of the image.
- Guidelines snap: if I don't want to snap, I just turn that off, but after
I moved an object or create nother guideline, snap is on again! Is this a bug or a feature? If it is a feature, please remove. I don't want to keep turning snap off every time.
- General preferences: anyway I can set up my preferences (like units in mm,
page a4, etc) for _ever_? Every time I create a document I have to change units from px to mm, etc. that's annoying. Same goes to Alignment. I'd like to set up so alignment would _by default_ be about the last selected object. (which is a much more useful IMO, people want to align two things, but usually one of them is a reference, so default should be either last or first selected, not "selection").
-I don't know about most of you people, but that little hand that replaces the arrow cursor when some object can be moved.. I hate that hand :), I would be much more happy with a plain arrow cursor all the time I'm using the "selector" tool, like in most programs.
- I _really miss_ shortcuts for alignment, like "b" for bottom , "t" for top
and so on. This makes life _much much_ easier (and faster).
- This should be a little silly but, how can I change the shortcut for
display mode? what is Crtl+KP_5?
Well, I guess that's it so far Keep up the excellent work!
cheers

known bug, they're uncompressed

also known bug - someone just need to get motivated and fix this

If you explicitly set snapping off it should stay that way, so please file a detailed bug on this. But why do you need guides if not for snapping to them?

Also known bug, the dialog must remember the status of the relative-to dropdown. Selection however is the most intuitive anyway and works for most people - making anything depend on the order of selection is a sure way to get complaints about mysteriously changing behavior.

That's the first time I hear anyone complain about this. To me, it's a very useful visual feedback. When I have to work in another tool which does not do this, I can't stop thinking that something is broken.

Yes, I thought about adding these and some others. Hopefully before 0.46.

edit your share/keys/default.xml
what is Crtl+KP_5?
control + keypad 5
First, thanks for the answers.
If you explicitly set snapping off it should stay that way, so please file a detailed bug on this. But why do you need guides if not for snapping to them?
Well, sometimes I use guides just as that, as an aid to draw things, but I don't ever want snapping. Like if I have a rectangle and want t align something with the _inner_ limit of the outline. guides don't work in this case.

Nice. really nice. thanks

Actually the dialog remembers the status (as long as I don't close it), but I was asking in a more general way, like in the last question about changing default behaviour.

I've heard complaints about this, actually -- but the complaint isn't really that the cursor changes, but rather that the hand cursor it changes to (depending on the user's cursor theme) is imprecise, without an obvious "hotspot".
Maybe a different hover cursor would be better? I'm not sure which one, though.

mine, with the industrial GTK theme, is a kind of cross (it's called "fleur" in the theme because it looks a bit like a flower) but it is big also and imprecise. I tried to design a smaller, more precise, one but couldn't get Inkscape to use it. I guess replacing it in the GTK theme would work but I think it was better if it was Inkscape specific so I tried to modify select-context.cpp and did not succeed.
you can find the xpm file attached (it's small so I attached it, I hope it will be OK).
Hello Carlos,

I cannot reproduce this. It might be related to a short-lived bug that existed somewhere between v0.45.1 and the current SVN, but that one has been solved. Is this behaviour still present in the latest version? What version are you using?
It shouldn't be allowed to have such a feature ;-)
Diederik
I am using v0.45 build april 4, 2007 (0.45ubuntu4)
I just tested it again: I turned off the snap option. When I clicked in the ruler to drag another guide, the snap options were turned on again.
anywhere I can get a newer .deb?

Confirmed, I can reproduce this in v0.45.1. Don't know why I didn't succeed in reproducing such a simple thing last night. ;-)
I can also confirm that it has been solved in SVN. No idea where you can get unstable Debian packages though, you might have to compile them yourself.
