I have only recently come across Inkscape am very impressed by the software it is very natural and easy to use. I am using Inkscape 0.4 something I know this is still being developed but Inkscape 0.39 does not seem to work with the graphics tablet I am using. The only criticism I would have is with the file dialog that does not show the network directories in windows. In 0.39 the file dialog seems fine. I download the most up to date exe file but I still don’t know how to get to the networked files.
I am not sure if this is a development request or a bug or I am simply not using the dialog correctly.
P.s. I hope that I am posting to the correct news group.
Kieran.

The file dialog is actually the standard GNOME file dialog. I've also noticed that it's quite different from what I expect from a file dialog. The best place to submit feedback about this is the GNOME/Gtk project, since then the improvements can be shared among all Gtk programs. :-)
However, definitely keep us in the loop. If the the GNOME project does not address the issues, perhaps someone would like to explore providing an override.

Which standard GNOME file dialog would that be? It seems to change with every release.
I find the newer GNOME dialogs to be usable, iff you know about pressing Ctrl+L to get a type-in-the-path box. I DO miss the tab-completion; it became a combo-box some time ago.

It's the standard for Gtk+ 2.4 as I understand. The reason seems to change with every release is that we've changed Gtk+ versions twice over the past few releases. Gtk+ went through a major change around 2.4.

I suspect we will probably stick with 2.4 for a little while. We've advanced precariously close to the bleeding edge by upgrading to Gtk+ 2.4, and this has led to a number of big concerns about dependencies. This is why we're putting effort into getting static binaries, for instance.
It's quite likely that Gtk+ 2.6 has a better file dialog. However we are not likely to upgrade to 2.6 in the immediate near term; it would be beneficial to get a better buffer between ourselves and the bleeding edge, so I'd like to see us hold off on Gtk+ 2.6 until perhaps Inkscape 0.42.
However, perhaps there are some alternative ways of allowing users to link to 2.6 through compile-time flags or something.

My apologies. I meant "every GNOME release", not "every Inkscape release".

It took a while for the file dialog to stabilize but I think you can be pretty sure that from gtk-2.4 on it should be good. After all the old file dialog lasted for years. The only change I'm aware of is better type ahead support etc.

if the Gnome file dialog can't access files from the network on Windows, a temporary workaround can be to map as drives the shares where those files are stored (you do that from Windows Explorer)

How much would it suck to use the native windows dialog on windows?
Well, we did that. And that infrastructure is still there. The problem is that it really became unmaintained, and so therefore didn't work nearly as well as the Linux one.
I think the real solution is that there needs to be a plugin written for the GTK+ file selector that works better with the windows file systems. This would be similar to how GNOME-vfs plugs into the file selector to allow access to network filesystems under Linux.
If this was done (assuming it isn't already) it would also help GIMP, GAIM, and other projects that use GTK+ on Windows.

I've actually grown quite fond of the GNOME file dialog. Since I do a bit of work in both Inkscape & GIMP, it's nice that my "bookmarked" folders are there for both. It may seem minor but it makes a big difference to me. Plus as the parent originally posted about networked drives no working, they fine work for me (at least with a build from yesterday).
