I'm a heavy inkscaper at work and I use it every day. At home, though, not so much. But I recently had to work for home, so I launched my copy of Inkscape which turned out to be a rather old one and, to my dismay, noticed that I had to wait about 10 seconds after the Inkscape window appears before I could do anything. So, downloaded a fresh copy of 0.91-pre2 and sadly, the same thing.
Here's what I'm seeing: *Inkscape window appears after a few seconds (maximized). no dockables. *Nothing happens until I click on the canvas. *After I click, program seems to halt, window title says "not responding" *After 10 seconds, dockables appear, program can be used
Now, I'm not seeing this at work. My home system is recent and stronf. Windows 7, 64bit, 8GB RAM, solid state HD. so if anything it should be even faster than at work, but something is stopping it. Did anybody run into a similar problem? I tried deleting preferences, no change.
Oh, one more thing, might be related: a few icons are showing a "missing file" icon instead of the normal one. preferences, undo, redo.
Well, I probably can't be very helpful. Even on 0.48.5, I have a 10 to 15 sec delay, for the window to open at all. And if I'm opening a large file (rather than new blank doc) it might take even longer. It's ready to use immediately after it finally opens.
I seem to recall some discussion (on InkscapeForum.com) a couple of years ago, where it seemed like Windows users reported this slight delay on opening, while Linux and Mac users did not. But I'll never be able to find it, for reference, and it's foggy memory.
Have you searched Launchpad, to see if that has already been reported, or discussed?
I'll be glad to do a quick test for you. I have a similar system, except with less RAM. Exactly which file did you download (zip, exe, 64, 32, etc.)?

Couldn't find anything.

It's the same on two different versions, one was a development version from about a year ago (froma 7zip archive), and now an MSI installer. But as I said on my workstation at the office, with similar hardware, same OS and Inkscape version, no problem. I'm thinking maybe a specific font is causing this. I'll try to see if I can uninstall some fonts, maybe that'll solve it.
Anybody else seeing missing icons, though?

Known issue, tracked in - Bug #1269698 https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1269698 "Preferences, Undo, Redo and Revert stock icons are missing (trunk >= 12882)"

Want excitement? Manually upgrade your production database. When you want reliability, choose Perforce. Perforce version control. Predictably reliable. http://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/clk?id=157508191&iu=/4140/ostg.cl... _______________________________________________ Inkscape-user mailing list Inkscape-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/inkscape-user
On Slackware Linux 14.1 I can fire up 0.48.5 in five seconds from click on the icon. On the same machine I can fire up 0.91pre2 version 13549 four seconds from a command line. So there is a pause but not a burdensome one.
