Ctrl + Delete issue for deleting nodes
Hi Friends, Was there supposed to be a change for Ctrl + Delete in 0.91?
I used to use Ctrl + Delete (pre 0.91) to delete a single node, when I did not want to preserve the shape. It essentially would leave a straight segment. Delete alone would try to preserve the shape.
Now it seems that Ctrl + Delete does preserve the shape, while just Delete does something in between preserving the original shape and not preserving it. (And it really is not very close to preserving the shape at all. Actually Ctrl + Delete preserves the shape better than just Delete.)
Here's the relevant section of the K/M Ref page: https://inkscape.org/en/doc/keys091.html#d0e4087
Attached is a convenient file for testing. The middle smooth node it the one I'm testing on.
This is using 0.91, 32-bit (exe installer) on Windows 7, 64-bit.
Technically, the following is entirely a separate issue, but somewhat related. In the K/M Ref page, it shows "click + click" to add a new node. However, I think it should technically be "double-click".
Click + click with the Node tool simply selects the 2 nodes on either side of the mouse. It takes a real double-click to add a node. (This has to do with the speed of clicking.)
It does say "double-click" in the fine print, but I think the bold print should say "double-click".
I'll be glad to write up bug reports for either or both of these, if they are indeed bugs.
Thank you very much :-)

Please check the preferences for the Node tool (the option at the bottom of the node tool preferences pane, see tooltip for a verbose explanation what it does) - likely you have swapped the default behavior.

Thanks ~suv.
Hhmm....I didn't realize there was even an option for that. I see that "Deleting nodes preserves shapes" is unchecked, although clearly I don't recall changing it (since I didn't even know there was an option).
Some questions:
Is it supposed to be checked by default? Why doesn't unchecking it reverse the behavior? (Delete doesn't preserve the shape, but it doesn't leave a straight segment, like Ctrl + Delete with box checked.)
I suppose I might have unchecked it, thinking it would reverse the behavior, and then forgot that I did it. But it doesn't seem to reverse the behavior completely.
Thanks again :-) brynn

It is checked by default. The preference already existed in Inkscape 0.48 (checked by default there too), and to the best of my knowledge has not changed in Inkscape 0.91.
Why doesn't unchecking it reverse the behavior? (Delete doesn't preserve the shape, but it doesn't leave a straight segment, like Ctrl + Delete with box checked.)
It does reverse the behavior. Attached are two files, this time both states of the mentioned setting ("Deleting nodes preserves shape") have been used as described, with Inkscape 0.48.5 and with Inkscape 0.91. Each Inkscape version was launched with default (new) preferences.
The results are the same: depending on the node tool setting, the behavior for the keyboard shortcuts is swapped.

Hi Brynn,
to be honest, I think you are suspecting a change or bug in Inkscape 0.91 were none is.
Attached are two versions of your original drawing, one node-edited with Inkscape 0.48.5, one with Inkscape 0.91 (default new prefs for each test). The result is the same.
Ctrl+Del does not mean that all adjacent nodes are converted to cusp nodes with retracted handles - it means that the handles of adjacent nodes stay unchanged. On the other hand deleting a node in default shape-preserving mode will modify (adjust) the handles of the adjacent nodes to preserve the overall shape of the path (as good as possible).

Hi ~suv, Not suspecting a change or bug. But just reporting what I saw as not what I expected, in case it might be a change or bug. However, I do see now, where I got confused. So thank you very much for looking into it. Problem solved. :-)
Thanks again, brynn
