Hello, people.
I have just installed the lastest snapshot of Inkscape from the CVS, and it looks very promising (although I am not quite satisfied with the docked windows).
I am trying to follow the steps listed in: http://inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.46-lpe-pathalongpath.png
I get to the point where the fish is attached to the skeleton path, but despite the fact I can "edit on canvas" it, whenever I cease editing the fish, it disappears, only the skeleton remaining visible. The fish is still there, though, because I can edit it again.
I will attach a sample SVG.
Hello,
Thanks for reporting the problem! There have been some changes and I have not updated the screenshot yet. I am sorry for that. For now, to use the steps in the screenshot, apply the "Pattern along path" effect to the curved path.
Regards, Johan

Hello Johan, thanks for your help.
I guessed it would be like that (the on-canvas text in the screenshot is wrong, but the text of the window seems to be right). But the problem is that after I apply the "Pattern along path" to the arc, I don't get it to display the "fish" (or green scribble in my case).
I am attaching a SVG file with a sample. It was created with the following steps: 1. Scribble the green thing. 2. Draw the arc. 3. Select the arc and Ctrl+Shift+7. 4. Choose "Pattern along path" and "Apply". 5. Click on the clipboard button.
From 5 on, I can click on the "edit on canvas" button and I
effectively see the outline of the supposedly green scribble attached to the arc, but it doesn't show whenever I cease editing, and it doesn't move when I comb the arc either.
I hope I made myself more clear this time, Denís.

I quickly looked at your file. Interesting problem, I'm not quite sure what is happening :) In any case, you should use the "Pattern along path" effect, not the Path along path (note the subtle difference, probably I will rename "path along path" to "bend path" or something like that). The Path along path effect does not work quite right in some cases.
So your steps are correct, but you should use the Pattern (!!!) along path effect :-)
Another way is this: (using path along path) 1. Scribble the green thing. 2. Ctrl+Shift+7. Apply "Path (!!!) along path" 3. Press 7 and bend the path :-)
There is a subtle difference between these two effects, that I hopefully have time to explain on the wiki somewhere.
Good luck! Johan

Oh! Now I do feel really dumb... But you are right, of course. I was choosing the wrong effect.
In my version of Inkscape (from this Sunday) the "Pattern along Path" effect is preceded by an "obsolete" tag. Why is this so?
Thanks for the help, by the way! This effect seems to be very powerful indeed.
Denís.

Indeed, following your instructions with the right effect did the trick. Now I am curious, though, as to what may the "Path along path" effect do?
Also, I couldn't help but notice that here: http://inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.45-patternalongpath.png
The effect dialog is different from the current one. I suppose those are the changes you mentioned, but the previous options seemed handy... How does one create text "combed outwards" as in the lower right corner of that screenshot with the current version of the LPE?
Denís.
