I was under the impression that there was an official Apple supported version of X11 that worked well (I believe they are even going to use X.org) but I guess it is still an optional extra.

It is an optional extra, just as the developer tools are also an optional extra which takes a lot of hard-disk space. But the latter are required to get anything fink.

As I said, having Inkscape be in the stable branch of Fink would already be an immense help for joe-7-pack!
