Hi,
I’m a new user migrating over from Illustrator. I’m running a Mac (Catalina 10.15.3) and Inkscape 1.0beta2 (2b71d25, 2019-12-03). I have deleted the preferences file prior to this test.
From a new, empty document, I created a couple of shapes.
Following an online tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gO7TU7N3sn0) my installation does not cut paths using the eraser and the ‘cut out from paths and shapes’ setting. I get a [red] line (path) as in the tutorial, but it remains after I lift the mouse and the underlying shape remains intact. I can delete the red line in the usual way.
On a second shape, I convert to a path, highlight a pair of nodes and click ‘cut’. The highlight on the nodes disappears, but the path remains intact.
Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
Cheers, Dave
Hi Dave,
I've found that the eraser only works on selected items - not sure whether that's a bug or a feature...
Have you tried it like that, too?

Hi Maren,
yes, I tried selected and not.
I suspect that this might be an issue with Catalina, which, incidentally, is why I am migrating from Illustrator. I’m running the beta version of Inkscape too, so there may be bugs there.
I suspect the heart of the problem is the failure of the ‘cut’ command, which must be part of the erase routine.
Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave,
then another possible cause might be that the objects are not paths directly - which type of objects do you have selected?
(but yes, there are known issues with the tool, that happen intermittently. Let's try to rule out known usability issues first, though.)
I don't know for sure, but I also believe that it's the Boolean difference operation that happens when you use the eraser in the 'cut from objects' mode.

Hi Maren,
I’ve attached a sheet that I created as originally described. The red lines are created by the erase tool.
The circle is an object, the square is an object that has been converted to a path. The behaviour is the same whether the entity is selected or not. The path entity seems to lose its selected status when I switch to the erase tool.
Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave,
I've seen this happen a lot of times in my own Inkscape, and many people have complained about it.
In my Inkscape 1.0.x, I cannot reproduce the issue currently with your file, though.
There is a similar bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1425794 that assumes it could be related to the viewbox and any transforms.
I was not able to find another open bug report, especially none on GitLab.
There is one closed report (https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1539778) on launchpad that might be what you are seeing - but it's supposed to be fixed in your Inkscape version (1.0beta2 (2b71d25, 2019-12-03)).
As it works for me, but does not work for you, maybe a difference in our preferences files could play a role, too.
Does it always *not* work for you, or are there cases when it does work?
