This doesn't help much, but I am running; Inkscape 0.48.2 r9819 (Sep 19 2011) running on Ubuntu 11.10 (Unity) and those commands work fine

I've reinstalled Inkscape and installed inkscape-trunk. Nothing.

Any ideas?
