-There are several tutorials on producing 3d buttons but what about 3d text? I want to simulate the look of embossed text as found on a mass market paperback cover. A gel looking text can be produced in Gimp following a 32 step (!) procedure. I am looking for an inkscape technique that is a little less arduous and of course in Inkscape, not Gimp.

Check out the filter's menu. Maybe something like Filters>ABCs>Matte Jelly or Filters>Bevels>Button.

Good suggestions. I'll try several flters and see which I like best.
