Another similar issue: unicode seems to be broken on the latest snapshot. All unicode characters automatically get moved to the top of the page, and it is impossible to move them from that location.

Please always provide an example file. It's highly unlikely this is caused by Unicode, so we need the file to find out the reason.
My apologies. I should have been more descriptive.
Opening a blank document, and typing text works, but any unicode characters appear at the top of the page, no matter where the text is positioned. The text box becomes enlarged (potentially very tall) to include the normal text and the unicode characters.
I included a simple svg file which shows this behavior. Note that the svg file displays properly in the 0.41 release, so the problem is not with the file itself, but with the way that inkscape is displaying it.
I also attached a screenshot showing the problem.
