Guys
BTW, can anyone tell me if I can choose where on the path to start the text? And can I subsequently move it along the path? (If, for example, I was trying to arrange text symmetrically about the top of a circle? Or to a specific point on *any* path?)

Hi Aaron, Assuming your in .41 you simply select some text, select the path, and do text -> put on path.
which tutorial are you refering to out of interest?
cheers

Hi Can any one please tell me how to place text on a path. I do not understand the tutorial on the subject, particulaly the 'convert object to curve , and the break selected paths to subpaths, operation.
Is there an easier way to do it like in the previous release?

I *believe* that Inkscape does not yet support that. However, SVG 1.1 does provide a mechanism to specify the start offset, and work is progressing that could get it in soon. Not sure if it would hit 0.42, but it's definitely being worked on.
Oh, and if you don't see it in there already, you should probably enter a bug for not supporting the start offset with text on a path (technically it's the 'startOffset' attribute of the 'textPath' element that's being ignored)

For now you can approximate that simply by adding spaces at the beginning of the text (for rough positioning) and then kerning with alt+arrows (for precise positioning).
