I have opened a map in Inkscape, and I want to draw several stars to mark points on the map where attractions may be found. I choose the star shape tool from the tool bar, put the cursor on the spot where I want to put the first star, click and drag. It draws a star, but some distance from the point where I want it, and not a predictable distance or direction from where I put the cursor. Then I tried to select it in order to move it to the point where I want it, by clicking on it with the selection tool. It won't select. If I leave it selected after drawing it, I can't drag it where I want it. If I copy it and paste it, it pastes under the point where the word "paste" was in the edit dialog. How is this supposed to work? -Joe Ward
I haven't been able to reproduce this behaviour on my machine, but I would recommend submitting this as a bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape . You'll probably get a faster response that way because bugs are being monitored very actively right now. You will need to specify: - which OS ? - which version of Inkscape ? - is it only the Star tool that causes a problem, do the other shapes like ellipse work properly ? - does this happen only with the map present, or do you have the same problem on a blank sheet with no map ?
with respect to the pasting, it will always occur exactly where the mouse is, so if you just clicked on a menu item, then that's where you'll get the star. To control the position of the paste, try using control-V on the keyboard so you can have the mouse where you like.
Thank you for the response. I have discovered that Inkscape appears to work as it should on my laptop. So I am assuming the problem is with this computer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program a couple of times, but I get the same strange behavior with each reinstall. This computer uses the same operating system and has more RAM and faster operating speed. So I dunno. I will submit it as a bug. Could be the uninstaller isn't getting everything cleaned off, or there is some known conflict with some other program I have running. I'll see what they say. Thanks.

Try reinstalling the mouse driver (what is the OS?)

Thanks, Rob. It seems to be the Wacom tablet, something I didn't even
think to mention. -Joe
I vaguely remember having this same problem on Linux with a Wacom a few months back. If I remember correctly deleting $HOME/.inkscape fixed things, it wasn't a driver problem.
Good luck,
Jed
Thanks. I'll see if that helps. -Joe

Joe this is probably a crappy hack, but it should work just the same.
1. Draw a horizontal and vertical line through the point where you want the star. 2. Use the align tool to align the object vertically to the horizontal line. 3. Horizontally the object to the vertical line.
I hope that helps.

Thank you, Aaron. I think I've determined that the problem is somewhere in this computer or in the install. It's not just the shape tool, unfortunately, but the text tool and other functions. I'm going to turn it in as a bug and hope it has popped up somewhere else. And meanwhile, I'll use Inkscape on my laptop, where it appears to work. -Joe ----- Original Message ----- From: Aaron Elmquist To: Inkscape User Community Sent: Tuesday, May 12, 2009 8:54 AM Subject: Re: [Inkscape-user] Shape Tool

This bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/212109 has the statement: "...the actual cursor is displaced by a few hundred..." but seems related to Wacom tablets only.
Are you using a Wacom?
(For me the center of the star is always where I first click)
