File->Print doesn't respect the file properties settings
Hi all,
When I do File->Print on my drawing, which is defined as landscape letter in File->Document_Properties, no dialog box is displayed. Instead, the printer asks me to insert A4, and when I put a letter page in the manual tray, it prints the drawing landscape, cutting off the right side of the drawing. The printer prints in duplex mode even though my default printer (lp) is defined as duplex off.
When I do File->Print_Direct, a dialog box is displayed to allow me to define my print command, and when I set it to:
lpr -P lp_dark
the page prints exactly as expected. Therefore this isn't urgent, but as something unexpected I figured a report might be in order.
I'm using the Inkscape 0.44 that came with my Mandriva 2007 Linux. My printer is an HP4050, which has postscript and does duplexing. Some of my printer definitions are from the CUPS database, while others (like lp_dark) are from the CD that came with the printer, suitably configured in CUPS. Here's some other info on my setup:
[slitt@...2358... ~]$ uname -a Linux mydesk.domain.cxm 2.6.17-5mdv #1 SMP Wed Sep 13 14:32:31 EDT 2006 i686 AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2600+ GNU/Linux [slitt@...2358... ~]$ head /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 6 model : 10 model name : AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2600+ stepping : 0 cpu MHz : 1916.821 cache size : 512 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no [slitt@...2358... ~]$ head /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 1555692 kB MemFree: 1034620 kB Buffers: 45732 kB Cached: 224408 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 330444 kB Inactive: 148300 kB HighTotal: 655348 kB HighFree: 210040 kB LowTotal: 900344 kB [slitt@...2358... ~]$

Hey all,
I was just about to answer that I usually export or print to PDF before I start the actual printout. Now looking at the previous posts on PDF trouble, that sounds a bit stupid but I find it hard to predict the output of Inkscape print process and it (used to) take(s) ages and loads of memory.
From PDF, using Acrobat Reader on an XP-system, I felt more in control
of the output, because you can see the page before you print and you can set "fit to page" and "extend to page" and more of these options. I even export to PNG sometimes and print from the Windows Fax- and Imageviewer.
Regards,
Maarten

There are really no troubles in 0.45, the PDF export in that version is pretty decent. In general, PDF is preferable as exchange format, both for import and for export as well as print. Direct print from Inkscape uses Postscript which is limited and obsolete.

I guess this answers the question I posted on the devel-list yesterday (about the printing bug). So if anyone has any direct-printing problems should he/she just use PDF as a workaround? Are there any plans for improving the printing functionality?

I have no idea. If you ask my personal opinion, then yes, I would recommend exporting either to PDF or to hi-res bitmap and printing that. That should be at least reliable.
As for direct print, as far as I know, it's still based on Postscript (at least on Linux - though I may well be wrong on this) and therefore will always be way behind the SVG, especially as we implement things like filters etc. So I'm not sure if it's really worth the effort to improve our PS-based print.
