Hello,
When starting Inkscape on WinXP I (always) get the message ** (indscape.exe:3984): WARNING **: Invalid UTF8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text()
And a dialog pops up. I cannot read the end of that dialog since it is not resizeable but it starts with my 'My Files' ('Eigene Dateien' - in german) - Directory...

That's in an area we're working on at the moment.
I suspect that the problem could be non-ASCII characters somewhere in that path. Or characters that are in an encoding other than the default local codepage.
Basically at the same time I was checking in some of my changes to Inkscape to start dealing with this, the main glib/GTK+ developers also checked in functions to deal with this issue better. Sometime next month they're expecting to do their next release.
Can you check the path your Inkscape is installed in and the path your user dir is in? Maybe paste them in here for us to check. There are a couple of different areas that problems are in. I'm suspecting this is might involve you name, as the "ü" could be causing some headaches. Mainly we need someone experiencing the problem to work with in tracking that down.
Thanks

Ok, Inkscape is installed in C:\Steffen\programme\Inkscape\inkscape.exe
And the image is located in c:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Manfred Glückselig\Eigene Dateien\
Could well be the 'ü'... ;-)

Can you give any more detail on exactly when this error comes up?
Is it during file open? During the initial launch?
I'm starting to think some of it might be an unrelated bug I've seen with mixed encoding names in a directory.

It happens after I've clicked on the Inkscape-icon to launch the application. The dialog pops up and a commandline-console showing that error-message.
