Hi everyone, is there a way to change the default units (for measurements, stroke widths. etc) permanently? I want to use px but need to change the setting with every new document. Best, Christoph
Hi,
the easiest way is to change the default.svg file
Best,
Here's a tutorial for making a custom default doc, or a custom template.

It might be good to add a "set as default" option in document properties. It's not easy to find/edit default.svg in inkscape (especially when root access is required to modify it).
Just a thought. -C

C R, I'm not sure what you mean by needing root access. Typically we suggest that users put their custom default or other custom template in their user directory, rather than where the program is installed.
Or is that what you meant by "root access"? As you may recall, I don't always understand tech terminology.
So that I don't have to remember how each different operating system handles file paths, I usually refer them to Preferences > System > User Config, to find the main folder, and then click /templates (or create the folder, if it's not already there).

Ah, this illustrates my point I think. The usual advice is "change default.svg" the user then has to know to either know that it is not already a file (in my case I did a system search and found the one that is installed with inkscape (and requires root permission to write), or have googled the right bit of advice off the internet.
No, none of this is great, or discoverable, but a button at the bottom of properties (or even the new from template dialog), would save having to muck around the file system at all.

Oh, so you mean a way to create the custom template where the user doesn't have to use Save As? (I thought you meant "root access" is access to where Inkscape is installed, rather than access to the file system as a whole.)
On one hand, I think it helps some users to understand a little bit more about how Inkscape works. For example, from time to time we hear a complaint that closing the only open instance of Inkscape (template or file) closes it completely. They seem to have some notion of wanting Inkscape to be an editor which is separate and distinct from any templates or files .
So I think it (accessing the file system to create a new template) might help some users to realize that whatever they are working on is already either a template or a file, and not just content they've placed in an editor.
However, I get your point that it could be made easier, and perhaps simpler for some users. I could see something maybe almost like a little wizard that walks you through it. Or even just a button which automatically puts it in the correct directory.

Inkscape's lack of a singular multi document interface is not a great usability convention in my experience. It makes it generally more difficult to understand because most any other editor does separate the instance from the file, and it's not possible to do convenient things like drag other documents into inkscape to open them along side other documents. It leaves the user shuffling windows around to get what they want.
If that is the reason for not having a "save as default template" button, then may be we could fix two problems in the long run. :)
See GIMP's tabbed "single window mode" document interface for a really nice solution to this issue.

Oh, I don't have any reason to think that's the reason. It's just a thought I had, about a possible benefit for accessing the file system to save a new template.
Personally it doesn't seem unreasonable to me as a user, to have to access the file system to do this. We have to access the file system to save new files, all the time.
But on the other hand, simplifying it a little bit, by having a button somewhere, doesn't seem unreasonable either.
For the complaint I mentioned, that we have to answer in forums, from time to time -- well, I don't share the sentiment. I'm perfectly satisfied with how Inkscape works, and am somewhat mystified why people would complain about it.
Yes, I've seen and used GIMP, so I have an idea how they treat the issue. I stop short of saying "solved the problem" because it doesn't seem problematic to me. But I can see benefits for both approaches :-)

Don't get me wrong, I love illegals and use it every day for my professional graphics work. However it's far from perfect. This is the reason it's beneficial to re examine our ways of doing things. Can we make it easier, faster, cleaner, and a more pleasant experience? Can we make the functionality more discoverable? Can we improve workflow for lots of common and advanced use cases? If so, then we definitely should consider it. :)
It's one thing to just complain about how it is, and another to consider how it might work better.
Just how I see it. -C

All best, brynn

Ah, this illustrates my point I think. The usual advice is "change default.svg" the user then has to know to either know that it is not already a file (in my case I did a system search and found the one that is installed with inkscape (and requires root permission to write), or have googled the right bit of advice off the internet.
No, none of this is great, or discoverable, but a button at the bottom of properties (or even the new from template dialog), would save having to muck around the file system at all.
My 2p. -C

Or is that what you meant by "root access"? As you may recall, I don't always understand tech terminology.
So that I don't have to remember how each different operating system handles file paths, I usually refer them to Preferences > System > User Config, to find the main folder, and then click /templates (or create the folder, if it's not already there).

It might be good to add a "set as default" option in document properties. It's not easy to find/edit default.svg in inkscape (especially when root access is required to modify it).
Just a thought. -C

Hi everyone, is there a way to change the default units (for measurements, stroke
widths.
etc) permanently? I want to use px but need to change the setting with
every
new document. Best, Christoph

Illegals = autocorrect(Inkscape). Sad thing is I've added Inkscape to my dictionary. So sad. :)
