I have a drawing like the attached compass.svg. I want to color it so that it looks like the attached compass.png. How do I do that in Inkscape?
Using the Paint Bucket Tool doesn't work well since it doesn't handle the sharp corners correctly, I get something like the attached SharpCorner.png (after removing the stroke of the created paths), when zooming in as much as possible.
I think that the problem is that the Paint Bucket Tool is bitmap based. I would rather need a vector based fill tool. Is there any such possibility in Inkscape?

Commonly this is done a little differently in vector drawing tools. Each shape you draw can be given a fill, so the compass you sent would consist of eight (similar) shapes, each filled with either dark blue or light blue. The fill property of any shape/path can be set through the Fill&Color dialog or by clicking on one of the swatches below the main screen while a shape is selected.
You may also want to try a tutorial or book on Inkscape for a more in-depth discussion of how to work with Inkscape.

If you have a look at the file I attached, you can see that the compass is made up of one path for the outer contour, and four straight lines divinding into sections. It does not consist of eight similar shapes. I am only able to fill everything with one single color.
So my question remains, how can I fill the different sections with different colors? Or, how can I transform the file I have into eight similar shapes that are easier to fill?

The easiest way is to turn on snap to intersection and nodes and then just draw out the shapes, tracing over your original shapes.
