linear transparency in bitmap patterns. Is it possible?
Is it possible to change the transparency of one part of the bitmap more than the other part?
You see this effect a lot, that the transparency is like a gradient.
For instance, look at the mirrored text in the following image:
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/teams/art.gnome.org/themes/splash_screens/Spl...
Of course, this image can easily be done in Inkscape, given that the font is available.
But imagine that the mirrored word 'gnome' is available as bitmap only. That can't be done easily, because you cannot change the transparency as a gradient. At least as far a I could figure out. Or maybe I am missing something.
Any suggestions?
The spam on this list is getting ridiculous, like every second or third message. If the list is not already closed to non-subscribers I really hope the admins will close it. (If this keeps up my spam checker will start blocking valid list digest mails because the list digest contains too much spam.)

You might be able to cheat and get something close by doing it backwards by lowering the overal transparency of the bitmap and then putting a rectangle containing a gradient on top of it.

Again, the decision to do this is up to the users of this list. If, say, a dozen member of this list voice in favor of doing this, and no one votes no, I will make the change.

Well you can put me down as a 'Yes' vote.
Got to the point were I'd say yes too, the rarity of real attachments relative to virii makes it not worth having.

Me too!
Although I managed to filter spam myself, the archives on the Internet are entirely useless because of all the spam. And also, you cannot choose digest mode with a personal spam filter. One spam mail in 20 real mails will still filter your digest.

Well... given the recent issues and that we have the web form going for general submission, I guess I have to vote "yes" at the moment.

Okay, including Alan, I count that this makes 12 yea, 0 nay. Or 13 if I count my own vote. ;-)
Bryce
Count me as a "yes" as well. I am sick of spam.

Another yes here - there's been more spam on this list in the last week than actual activity!

One thing you can do to help is trim responses to only include pertinent content.
That actually helps some non-digest spam checking recipients.
:-)

I make more effort than most to trim long posts so I'll just assume that wasn't directed at me.

I dont have the patience to figure out how to filter the spam from digests without blocking the whole digest (but presumably if you were willing to waste the processing power you could break up the MIME parts, filtert them and reconstitute the digest).
Changing the subject line occasionally so it matches the actual subject helps too.

Well... not directed in general, but in this specific case (especially as I spent a few minutes trying to figure out the reason for the entire post quoting). That is, this one single mail addressing spam filtering just happened to be the type to choke certain spam filtering.
Since the content had addressed spam filtering issues with digest readers, I thought it was important to point out that over quoting could cause similar problems but for non-digest subscribers. The main reason to mention it was to try to help minimize negative impact from spam filtering for both digest and non-digest people.
(also, it was slightly amusing that you broke with your usual trimming practice to point out the spam filtering problem, but in a way that inadvertently added to other types of spam filtering problems)

Actually, I'd looked at that in this case, but since the content direction had already changed but kept the same subject line, I didn't want to wander things off too much. (Oh, and though some mail readers will thread by subject, others will override that with threading by In-Reply-To fields. It helps some users, but not all)
If your using SVN you can use a mask with a gradient on it...
