Another Inkscape Book update
Hi,
I've once again updated my book "A Guide to Inkscape":
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/index.php
The book should now cover almost all (if not all "non-experimental") features of Inkscape v0.42. The biggest changes are the completion of the Tiling and Tracing chapters as well as adding an index.
This is still a draft. I plan on adding more examples and of course the new v0.43 features when they have stabilized.
There are a few things that I don't fully understand. Perhaps someone could enlighten me:
1. Find dialog:
What is the use of the "Text" entry box. I could not get it do anything.
2. Gradient handles:
Is there a good use for gradient handles that snap to each other?
3. Text and Font dialog, Spell checker:
Does this actually work?
Thanks,
Tav

It searches in text objects, but appears to be broken currently. Could you please file a bug report.

Of course - when you have 2 or more objects selected and create a gradient across them, it's actually 2 or more snapped-together gradients. Without snapping you would have to edit them all separately.
- Text and Font dialog, Spell checker:
Does this actually work?
Never tried that, can anyone comment?

It works very well indeed. Mistyped words get underlined in red.
What is the problem exactly?

The problem is that it doesn't work :)
Install/Build scripts do find enchant headers on my system, but
a) typos don't become marked as such with a red underline neither on canvas, nor in "Text and Font" dialog;
b) there is no obvious way to tell Inkscape that some part of the text is in English, and some, say, in German, which is bad for _any_ implementation for spellchecking.

They are here in the Text and Font dialog. In the second tab, not the first one. So I wouldn't go as far as saying "it doesn't work".

Agreed.

Of course I'm talking about the second tab! :) There's absoultely nothing except mistyped text

Here is what I see: http://www.lrn.ru/~avp/images/text_and_font.png
[avp@...21... graphics]$ rpm -qa | grep aspell aspell-en-0.51-12 aspell-0.50.5-6
My locale is ru_RU.UTF-8

Oooooh.
That one sounds like a fun RFE to implement.
Got it entered? :-)

No need to file, I already fixed it in CVS. Now it works as it should.

Your comment above and the Inkscape home page notes that you are still "a bit short on examples" - if you want some help on preparing particular illustrations, please let me know, I have time on my hands these days, time to do the stuff I want since I have retired! I would be delighted to do my best to help. Probably other users could contribute also from work they have in progress.
Regards
Adam
