I used another piece of software for a project instead of Inkscape because of the long wait before I could see the font list after starting to select from the font drop down menu. Is there any way for me to improve the performance via some setting?
I am using Inkscape .45.1 on Mac OS X 10.4.9 PowerPC 1.33 GHZ with 1 GB RAM. No other problems on the system.

Hi,
1/ there's a bug with the font drop down list currently, which make it appear inconsistently. the bug report is there: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php? func=detail&aid=1644192&group_id=93438&atid=604306 could you check if the behavior is the same for you and add your impressions in the comments of the bug report please? 2/ when the font list does appear, it has preview of all the fonts in it so it probably take a bit of time to render this preview if you have many fonts. However, your hardware should be able to handle it quite correctly.
The solution I would advise currently if to use the text and font dialog (the T icon on the main toolbar or SHIFT+CTRL+T) which, in addition, is quite similar to the Mac OS X font palette. There is someone working on Text handling and fonts currently, for the Sumer of Code so there's hope those problems will be sorted out after the summer!
