Hi list,
Just installed http://inkscape.modevia.com/ap/inkscape200606080302.package
1. Compressed Inkscape SVG appears twice in 'Save as' menu 2. Effects -> Render -> Function Plotter doesn't render anything, but takes a few second on doing something. No error or warning returned. 3. I may be using some wrong inkscape version, but the sculpture thing (alt drag nodes) doesn't work :(
regards, Karol

Here I have it twice... but it's two different items.
There is compressed "Inkscape SVG" and compressed "plain SVG". Is that what you are seeing?
If so, the latter saves a stripped down version of the SVG that's more compatible with limited user agents.

create a rect and select it, then use the effect. The problem is the missig explanation. To get that out i looked into the python code of this extension.

The problem when you use Linux (Xorg) is that [Alt] + dragging with mouse move the window. You could use Windows to solve the problem - maybe the Inkscape developers want that you use Windows instead of Linux.
ok, maybe a bad joke, here a work around for linux users: - select all nodes (or at least more that one to see the effect) - press down the (left) mouse over a node - start pressing [ALT] - move the still pressed mouse

Err, no. The problem is that when you use whatever peculiar window manager key bindings you happen to have, Alt+drag moves the window. Sounds like you ought to change that on your machine. This certainly isn't a Linux or Xorg or twm or fvwm or Sawmill or kwm or blackbox or whatever you use problem.

The problem actually isn't Xorg, but instead the Window Manager. Most WMs allow you to configure which key will drag Windows. An easy fix is to use the Super (Windows) key instead of Alt for the window moving behavior. Then the Alt key will work fine and as intended.

It would still be nice to be able to configure this in Inkscape. The Ubuntu default is Gnome w/ Metacity, and the default move-window key is Alt+drag. I'd almost bet that that isn't just a Ubuntu default, but rather a Gnome default, so it's not just the Ubuntu users who will get bitten by this.
Can someone using KDE comment on the default use of Alt in KDE? Is Alt already in use by default in KDE?
Thanks,

Yes, it is. (I use Alt-Drag to pull windows around quite a bit.)

Using Alt really does make sense on Windows, and probably OSX. Asking every Linux user on KDE, Gnome, and probably other WMs to change their key bindings seems a little presumptuous.
It must be hard to work arround the wide range of Linux configurations, and I don't know what percentage of Inkscape users are even on Linux, but I think since the two leading WMs use Alt+drag by default, maybe the developers could reconsider their use of the Alt key.
Thanks,

For what it's still worth these days, CDE also uses Alt-Drag for moving windows, and I guess KDE and Metacity inherited that.

Thanks for all the answers, I will sumarize in one post
1. The 'Save as' is still the issue, here comes my save list: 1. Inkscape SVG 2. Plain SVG *3. Compressed Inkscape SVG (*svgz) 4. Compresse Plain SVG (*svgz) ... 15. Compressed Inkscape SVG with media (*zip) *16. Compressed Inkscape SVG (*svgz) 17. Guess from extension
2. As somebody mentions, Function Plotter lacks some error/warning about requring the rectangle (which solves the issue). I find it counterintuitive.
3. Sculpture works fine now. I knew about alt-drag and Linux WM issues. The thing is I've tried with maximum 3 nodes selected and it didn't work. This time I have tried with 4 and everything works ;)
Thanks again, Karol

Counterintuitive it is. I missed the string freeze due to lack of time. If you want to submit a patch for a little explanation, that would be great. We can try to get it into 0.44.1.
