Scale Journal 8/9 Call For Participation + Guest Editor Joel Swanson + http://scale.ucsd.edu/
Greetings,
+ please forward +
This email is a call for submissions from theorists and practitioners in the following fields: Art, Architecture, Communication, Comparative Philosophy, Computation, Computer Audio, Critical Theory, Design, Literature, Media (New and Old), Music, Performance, and Software Design.
SCALE (http://scale.ucsd.edu) would like to encourage you to submit "work" for its upcoming online-only August & September issue. SCALE is a non-profit journal that explores new modes of production and dissemination based on open-source and networked communities.
The theme for the August/September SCALE is APOCALYPSE. As we look forward to the coming election in November, it seems prudent to reinvest ourselves in exploring the possibilities of our own self-destruction. Often rooted in religious and science-fiction genres, apocalyptic themes have proven fruitful as a framework from which to question our collective hopes, fears, and concerns, on a local and universal scale. In your submissions, feel free to explore and exploit your personal imaginations of APOCALYPSE as a loose starting point for your submission. Please keep in mind that SCALE likes to abide by terms obliquely, and as such encourages all types of submissions, from dirty sketches and musings, to polished images and essays.
Initially formulated within the graduate programs of the Visual Arts at the University of California, San Diego, SCALE was created by Jon Phillips (http://www.rejon.org) and Patrick W. Deegan (http://www.pwdeegan.org) as a strategy of response to a growing interest in developing Open Source communities across the globe. SCALE is a monthly publication living in both PDF print and online PDF/WIKI format.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
+ Additional instructions for submission can be found at http://scale.ucsd.edu under “Read the File and Style Guidelines.”

+ Multimedia submissions will be hyperlinked for download from a page within in the compiled PDF publication. If submitting a file for linkage, it is recommended you also submit some type of graphic image in consideration of how your piece will be represented in the layout. By doing so, we can include the URL to your file within the image provided by you. If other circumstances are desired, please let us know.
+ For Multimedia submissions, please upload the actual file and NOT the URL to where it is located on behalf of your own site. WE WILL BE HOSTING THESE FILES ON THE SCALE SERVER. However, mentions of your respective websites are allowed.
+ All work submitted will be initially accredited to you unless suggested otherwise, however, in its online format the work will be deemed Open Content (as defined by http://www.creativecommons.org) and could possibly be subject to artistic reinterpretation (at a later date) on behalf of SCALE’s community of readers.

Hi,
It seems to me, inkscape print to ps doesnot handle transparency and gradients.
Can I make it work?
Thanks, Aewyn

I'm pretty sure that PostScript does not support an alpha channel (i.e. transparency), at least on most devices. Likewise for gradients.
So the short answer is, no. Sorry.

OpenOffice draw is able to generate both of them, as any of vector applicatons, as I know.
(mentioned before, but scribus is unable to import any simple inkscape svg correctly, so it is not a solution for printing)
Thanks, Aewyn.

The test I just did (using oodraw) indicates that this is done by rasterizing the image -- the scalability is lost. That is more like exporting to PNG.

Hi,
I run another problem: I would like to save only a selection from svg. I try to copy it to clipboard, but another instance of inkscape does not find anything on clipboard. When I select File/New, it seems paste something strange but not the selections.
So how can I copy something to another svg ?
Clearing unwanted object is not a solution, because it is an converted svg (with pstoedit), and inkscape could not select all objects (it freezes), there can be some error in svg. So I could not find all the corrupt objects.
Thanks, Aewyn

Known problem, different instances do not share the clipboard.
When I select File/New, it seems paste something strange but not the selections.
This must work. Please submit a bug with full details, steps to reproduce and an example file.

This is a bug too, please submit separately with the offending file.
The attachment is converted from corel ps with distiller. Simple test only.
Fonts remains fonts, gradient is pseudo, but is ok.
Bye, Aewyn

This was much improved in the recent versions of Scribus. If you have a problem with an SVG file, let the Scribus developers know about it.

Sure! I think to get transparency to work properly you're going to have to use Postscript Level 3 -- which, to my understanding, is the first version to support alpha.
The thought in the back of my head for doing this would be to steal the Postscript/PDF engine from Scribus and plug it in to Inkscape. It would be really cool if you did this.
If you have questions about where to put stuff or what you can do feel free to ask.

PS - I cc'd the devel list because this discussion should probably be moved there.
I'm not an ps expert, but I will subscribe to the devel list, and see what can I do.
But beware! If I rush into the devel list, you'll get a big pressure to implement missing, but very necessary features. ;)
Bye, Aewyn

As we would only expect from new users/developers ;)
