Latest I heard on IRC was that Inkscape *is* using Cairo and in the end it's actually *faster* overall than libart.

Currently cairo is only used for outline mode. For that, it is indeed somewhat faster than our renderer (not libart - we're not using libart for a long time), but more important is that it takes a lot less memory. Converting the regular mode is pending on some bugfixes in cairo.
