Gradient smoothnes quality (Linux user)
Hi there,
I would like to ask about inkscape gradient fill option. When I use gradients I can easily recognise tone steps in the gradient ..especially when I am using few gredient filled objects with different transparency levels. What might be the reason ? I using Debian , Xorg 24 bit Color Depth.
When I draw the same picture under windows with AI or Photoshop the gradients are more smooth.
Thanks, Paul

I have been seeing the same thing. At first I thought it was my LCD screen that didn't support the full range of 24bit color. Later I found out that gradients drawn in Photoshop or GIMP had no such banding effect. I was pretty surprised, especially because I believed this issue had already been fixed in Inkscape (I remember having read something about it before).
Created in inkscape (export looks identical to what I am seeing in Inkscape itself): http://www.aphax.nl/images/inkscape/inkscape-gradient.svg http://www.aphax.nl/images/inkscape/inkscape-gradient.png (Export from Inkscape)
A gradient created with GIMP: http://www.aphax.nl/images/inkscape/gimp-gradient.png
Interestingly, if I open the SVG in Firefox, Eye of Gnome, or import it in GIMP, they all display the banding effect there too. But maybe they all use the same library for rendering SVGs or something.
