FontForge doesn't handle alpha channels, so all icons should be indexed images with a transparent color.

Or someone could write a patch to fix this limitation.... (just pointing out alternatives here...)

If anyone is interested in paid work on improving FontForge's custom toolkit, I have some funds available for that - although I'd like to see Inkscape's capabilities as an SVG Font Editor improved as I think that would have a better price:performance ratio.
