hi there. I would like to convert a batch of bitmaps into vector graphics using a set potrace command. Any help in identifying the switches would be really appreciated. I am using inkscape v.41
thanks steve

You don't need Inkscape for that. A command-line potrace is available as an independent product: http://potrace.sourceforge.net

thanks for that.i have looked at it. I was under theimpression that inkscape has added to potrace. It has a way of converting bmp images to greyscale using multiple passes. I cannot see how to do that on potrace.

Yes, but that we built on top of potrace, without changing it. We just call it several times with different thresholds. I think you can do the same in batch mode with command-line potrace as well. Anyway, Inkscape does not have a command line interface for that, though we might add it one day (please check if there's a RFE on that, and if not, add a new one).

Just for the record: Xara has a tracer too. Its not bad at all. I just tried with the new 0.5 release. Dont know it can be called from commandline, but (in my experience) the xara's tracer is superieur what is in inkscape (or I was out of luck).

No it cannot, and in general it does not have a command line interface worth speaking about. Remember, it comes from Windows :)

My experience has been exactly opposite. Potrace does wonderful job on simple images like logos, whereas with Xara's tracer I was never able to get acceptable results and in most cases found it easier just to trace a bitmap by hand using Pen.

potrace is indeed a wonderful thing, although in this case i am working with photographs.I don't need the output to be editable paths it am just doing it as i like the look of them. I have investigated autotrace and that seems to fit my needs. It produces a similar output to inkscapes clever use of potrace multiple passes , and is command line.

hi steve,
command line potrace would be interesting. one problem i have is that i set inkscape tracing a big image with multiple scans and my pc grinds to a halt until it's done. if i could do it on the command line i could set it so it only uses a small proportion of the system resources so i can do other stuff in the mean time.
even better i could set up a little render farm. i could have a second pc on the network set up so my main pc passes it the images and gets back the completed svg when they are done. leaving my pc free from doing all the grunt work.
i'm going to have to get the command line potrace and have a play with it.
