I'm using an 0.47 nightly from 06 Sep on Ubuntu Jaunty Linux. I've been using Inkscape (0.46) for about 8 months now for a variety of random web graphics. I'm not an art professional by any means.
Anyway: in the nightly, while it's fixed some chronic crashes from 0.46, has itself a couple of quirks. One that is particularly annoying is this: I select some objects/paths, and then do something - maybe set clipping, or group, or change color; it's not completely consistent or at least it seems that way. After an operation like that, my stuff apparently remains selected (according to the UI), but subsequent attempts to use the arrow keys to move the elements around have no effect. I have to de-select and reselect the elements and then of course the arrow keys move them around just fine.
I'm wondering if this may have something to do with layers, or something else about the application with which I'm not very familiar. One reliable way to make the effect happen is this: draw a rectangle, type "s" to switch to the "select" tool, and then go to the "fill & stroke* box and set "blur" to something bigger than zero. After that, the rectangle will be blurry and apparently selected, but the arrow keys won't do anything (for me anyway).

It's focus. You need to click the main window (the canvas) -- click the title bar or someplace neutral on the toolbar so you don't lose your selection. This irks me all the time, but I got used to it.

Well, that doesn't seem to help, or else I can't find a good place to click in the Linux window. Clicking the "Select" tool icon again doesn't do it, nor does clicking the main window title bar, nor any toolbars or the menu or anything else.
Whatever the problem, it's a severe usability problem.

It is indeed the focus; if you notice blur value was changing because keyboard focus is still on the slider control. You can press the Escape key to get back to the main drawing window, I find this easier than using the mouse.

Yes, "Esc" key does the trick. Thanks - that's not *that* bad, and I suspect I'll get used to it pretty quickly.
My apologies to "Donn" for any implication that I doubted his suggestions.

You can also use Alt+Tab to select the main window as focus.

The "alt-tab" trick doesn't work for me; maybe that's a Linux thing but everything is already inside a single application window (that is, a single window as far as the system window manager is concerned).

Programming is as much about organization and communication as it is about coding.
I like Perl; it's the only language where you can bless your thingy.

I'm not running 0.47 so I can't test it but if it isn't Alt+Tab, try Ctrl+Tab. (It's got to be something+Tab).

I'd only expect that to work if you "detach" the palettes. I'd guess that Donn's trick of clicking on the window title was effectively doing the same thing.

Eeek! How do I "un-windowize" the tear-off dialogs once they're torn off? I can iconify them, but how do I get Inkscape to make them part of the main window again?

Phew - never mind, I got it. I was trying to do it with my Wacom pen and that awkwardness was making it hard to grab what needed to be grabbed.
