I've been using Inkscape (seemingly forever) for all my schematic drawings, and find it works extremely well for me. However there is one thing I find really annoying.
Often I'll pick up a small object to copy - a connecting 'blob' for example - what then happens is that as soon as I move to where I want to place the object the pointer turns into a fist totally obscuring the place I want to copy to. This is because I *always* want to put the object on top of another - crossing lines, in this case.
I have to just do the copy somewhere near, then try and position it relying on 'snap to grid' to line it up properly. Alternatively I have zoom in massively so that the object in now larger than the fist and I can see it again.
For my purposes it would be far better if the pointer either stayed as a pointer all the time (with the hot-spot at the tip) or if it had to change, for it to become fine cross-hairs.
Does anyone else find this a problem?
I second that...it isn't at all useful
I vote for the fine cross-hair, being able to adjust the line width would be a bonus

What I do is "Ctrl+D" (duplicate) then press and hold Alt, and then clickdrag with the mouse anywhere on canvas to move the new object. The main trick: you can move objects by selecting them, press and hold Alt, click with the mouse anywhere on canvas and drag it to move the object.
Hope that helps, Johan

I don't have a problem with it. I have my mouse pointers set to be quite transparent, so I can see things under the move hand, and I picked a set of pointers for which the move hand has its hotspot in an obvious place (just below the gap between the second and third fingers).
If you can't change your pointers or can't make them transparent, a neat workaround is to move objects with the arrow keys, which also helps if you have a tendency to drag the object to just the place you want it and then twitch before you let go of the mouse button.

Another work-around: press and hold the Q-key when using one of our nightly builds, which will activate the quick-zoom feature. This will temporarily zoom such that the current selection fills your screen, which I believe is just what you need!
