(using 0.47 nightly from a couple days ago, Ubuntu Linux)
How does one affect parameters for one of the pre-defined filters in the "Filter" pull-down menu? The Inkscape "Help" chapter about Filters bears little resemblance to the actual application; at least, it's certainly hard for me to tell what it's talking about when I look at what the application actually shows me. When I try to use any of the filters, I get a brief, blank pop-up dialog that shortly disappears, and then the filter takes effect with some canned parameters. I have to assume that the filters are actually configurable, but for the life of me I can't see how one does the configuration.

Open you have applied a pre-defined filter you can tweak it by opening up the Filter Editor dialog (at the bottom of the filters menu); see http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Filters.html for details on how to use. This is written for 0.46 but the dialog is pretty much the same in 0.47. Note that most of the pre-defined filters are rather complex and it may be difficult to understand exactly what is happening. Trial and error may be the best recourse.

Oh ok, I think that makes sense. I'll give it a try.
When I open the "Filter Edit" dialog, there are a whole bunch of filters listed with mostly meaningless names ("filter3818"). Are those just filters created automatically for blurs on various random objects in the document (and other things like that)?

Yes. Those are just randomly assigned names for the filters. 1. Each of the filters with the checkboxes can be reused for other objects. Simply select an object and check one of the existing filters. If you adjust any of the filter parameters, it will now apply to all objects using that particular filter. Handy. 2. Each filter consists of a number of feFilter primitives which may be adjusted individually. Not all of them are very obvious but they are mostly very flexible and powerful, which is another way to say that it takes some practice to master them. 3. The drawback of the current filter implementation is that if you apply two filters, say drop "shadow" and "colorize", the filter primitives will mix, making it hard to determine how the parameters work. /JimmyVolatile
