When I try to compile Inkscape 46 I run into the usual lib problems. I downloaded the latest versions per the urls on the Inkscape install page but that doesn't work. I downloaded earlier versions and ran ldconfig but that didn't help. For the following products which exact versions do I need? I was successful in loading libsigc++-2.2.3. The rest don't work: gdkmm-2.4 glibmm-2.4 gtkmm-2.4
I use Slackware 13 which was just released. I installed the Boehm thingamabob (Bone Collector?).
Please try to compile 0.47 pre2 instead, as 0.46 will no longer be supported in the near future. It can be obtained at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/files/
A tarball can be found under the 0.47pre2 section.
Cheers, Josh

AFAIK 46 is the latest stable version.
I use Linux and the versions you referred me to have an .exe suffix.
I still need the info requested above AFAICT to compile either version.

0.47 is set to become the stable version in the next few weeks. As for using linux, please expand (click on) the entry for 0.47pre2 (just above the exe link) to see the tarballs.
And yes, you will still need the specifics of compiling, I'm just trying to ensure that you will be using the newest version. First off, do you have the -dev versions of the libs installed when trying to compile? If we can get you building on slackware, it's just one more place that we'll know that 0.47 will work.

I'd started a wiki page a while back to try to collect up such information: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Tracking_Dependencies
I'm unfamiliar with the details on slack, but in general you'd need to use your distributions means of installing the runtime and developer packages for each item.
So the first step is getting libraries that will work on your distro. That is usually up to your distro itself. You *can* download, build and install them yourself, but that often leads to problems.

Slackware works a little differently. All the libraries that come with the system are installed from the install dvd. There is no equivalent to apt-get etc. And the Gnome gui was dropped years ago. Some libs are included but they are likely not to be the newest.
I really don't have time to play hopscotch with all the different available editions of 5 different files. So if anyone has an Inkscape 47 that works and knows what versions of the key libraries are installed a listing of the libs and their functioning versions for Inkscape would be very helpful. The current list is:
No package 'gdkmm-2.4' found No package 'glibmm-2.4' found No package 'giomm-2.4' found No package 'gtkmm-2.4' found No package 'gsl' found
