Hi there -
I've just downloaded Inkscape version 0.46 for the first time. The file was a universal binary file; however, when I tried to open it, my computer showed me the message "You cannot use the Application 'Inkscape' with this version of OSX." Am I missing something basic here about the program's compatabilities?

Well, first of all do you have X11 installed? I believe that 10.5 had it by default, but with 10.4 you'd have to manually install it from the OSX discs.
Hi Jon,
I got the right version and now I'm on to the X11 problems, yes. I downloaded an install package, but the installer tells me that I have a newer version on my computer already (I installed the developer tools once) - trouble is, I can't find it anywhere! Where should it be, so that I can tell the program where it is, when it asks me upon startup?

Just to make sure but, have you downloaded the version for Tiger? http://www.inkscape.org/download/
The one for Leopard won't work on Tiger.

Hi JiHo,
Yes - that's exactly what the problem was. It's solved now, and the next problem is figuring out where X11 is on my computer. I'm running OS 10.4.11, and when I try to install the versions available online, the installer tells me that I already have the program on my computer; however, I can't find it when I search for an application in the Finder. Hm.

Problem solved! Thanks a lot for the help guys. I can open the program and successfully open an existing .svg file now. Now, I just need to read all the documentation online and learn how to use the program....

Glad to hear that. You may ant to start with the excellent tutorials that are bundled with Inscape: Help menu > Tutorials. They open as regular SVG files so you can directly modify stuff on the canvas and test what the tutorial describes. Very powerful way of learning.
