I'd like to know a little more about node editing.
Nodes have two handles, which can be dragged around to produce the desired curve. I have used Corel Draw in the past so I am familiar with this concept.
What I don't understand is how Inkscape decides whether the handles should be symmetrical or not, and how I make them line up. Sometimes I find that the node handles are already locked to point in opposite directions, and sometimes they are independent. How do I change this? Most of the time I want to make them line up but change the lengths of the handles independently. I think this may be because some paths are created with the "freehand lines" tool, and others with the "Bezier curves and straight lines" tool. That's how I created my example: http://www.hibbs.me.uk/images/handles.svg
One of the mid-line nodes has handles that move sunchronously, the other has independent handles (so the node can represent a sharp corner). How do I change one type to the other? I just edited the sodipodi:nodetypes property from cscc to cssc and that did it, it initially rendered as a sharp corner but as soon as I dragged a handle, the other one snapped to be lined up with it. So, all I need to do is count the number of nodes and edit the appropriate character.
Additionally, how do I add nodes to the middle of a path? Is there a "reverse simlpify"? :-)

If the handles were collinear, the node behaves as smooth - handles always stay collinear (locked). To make it cusp, select it and press Shift+C (cusp).
, and how I make them line up.
select it and press Shift+S (smooth). Also there are toolbar buttons for the three node behaviors; the third is symmetric (Shift+Y) - same as smooth but handles also have the same length.

Select more than one node and press the button with + on the toolbar.
