Gradients lost Inkscape to Adobe Illustrator
Can gradient fills be exported to Adobe Illustrator file type?
Gradients seem to be totally lost, and a bitmap cannot be converted to ai without a Ghostscript error: GPL Ghostscript SVN PRE-RELEASE 8.61: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1
I am using Inkscape version 0.45.1-1 (Debian install)
TIA, Anthony
have you tried to directly open the SVG file in Illustrator? This usually works best when going from Inkscape to Illustrator. You'll need a newer Illustrator CS2 or CS3. They should import the SVGs just fine, including gradients, patterns, groups, etc.

OK, the gradients convert using SVG, but the fonts and layers have problems. I can probably work with that by deleting all unrelated layers and saving one layer at a a time, then try finding commonalities between Linux and Windows fonts before designing.
Thanks.

Out of curiosity, why do you need layers _both_ in Inkscape and AI? Usually one of the two is your main workhorse, where you do most of the stuff and need layers, whereas the other is used purely for conversions, printing, sending to customers for preview etc.

True, I can do without layers in AI, just save a bunch of separate files.
I suppose it would be nice to create one file with all the required data of each color/job separated on each layer, or simply press one button to produce the AI file required for my supplier. So now it consist of a few steps, no big deal.
It would be nice if the inability to save gradients to AI came up as a warning.
What exactly are the problems with the fonts and the layers?
Regarding layers, the grouping structure should import well in Illustrator. Usually you get one main group and then a couple sub-groups (wich you can treat as layers). The layer names aren't preserved, but if you write the layer names into the id of the groups in the XML-editor, those id values will be preserved in Illustrator. Of course only certain characters are allowed in ids and they can't start with a number.
What exactly are the font issues? Wrong font? Or are they more like text issues than font issues? Are you complaining about the treating of multiline text in SVG?

Thank you for the ideas about layers. My problem was just that the layers weren't showing up as layers in AI, but you explained a workaround (group names).
My problem with the font was I used Helmet, which was not on the AI machine. I'll be more careful in the future.
Thanks for your suggestions.
