Re: [Inkscape-user] Mask/Clip is kinda hard to use

Paste Inside sounds like a very nice concept. Provided you can paste inside and In Place.
It was nice. Very nice. It had the superb quality of being entirely intuitive. You draw some larger shape. You select a bunch of any other stuff. You select the big shape and Paste Inside. Bang! Your stuff now lives inside the big shape - as if in a new world - like a new canvas almost! You could select the stuff inside, move-it, node-edit it, fill it, etc. Anytime you wanted stuff out, you sub-select it and Cut it. Bang!
An Outliner that lists objects and shows clipping/masking/cloning relations would be helpful :)
It would only be useful if the user-interface of mask/clip remains so hard for humans to actually use.
Thanks for you other info! /d

For the record, I wanted our clip/mask to function like it did in Illustrator... until Bulia explained why our way is better.
Why is it better? It's much more flexible and intuitive once you have a better understanding of Inkscape as a whole. The good news? You can achieve what you want quite easily in Inkscape.
First, group those objects that you want on the "inside", then clip that group (as opposed to clipping a bunch of separate objects). Once clipped, if you double click on that group you will "enter" it. This means that you can move the shapes around within the "new world" as you put it. :) When you're done editing inside the group you can double click on empty canvas or simply select an object not within that group to leave it.
A recap... Group objects, clip group, and "enter" the group (double click) to move objects around inside the clipped area. Then you can leave the group when you're done.
The best part is that it's consistent with how we handle all groups. A key thing to look for when you traverse into a group is in the status bar. If you look at the layer selector (in the status bar), you will see that it changed to the group's name/number as opposed to the parent layer's name. This is very useful if you especially if you have nested groups.
I hope that was helpful more than it was confusing. :)

Aaah. You get the love! :) 'tis a wonderful thing to behold (*). Thanks for the info!
I must try the Mask thingy now - getting the fill in the 'parent' to change the opacity of the children, without actually 'filling' the parent ... if you see get my drift ?
I hope that was helpful more than it was confusing. :)
Spot on! Is there anything about this in the Help? I looked, but might have missed it.

(*) I did just install the latest autopackage, so not sure if that would have worked in standard 0.44. Still, I am happy again!

Woohoo! Glad it's sufficient... I was weary of our method at first, but now I can't stand other implementations. ;)

Well, I have a tutorial that I started a while back that is for clippaths, masks, and patterns. The problem is I have had a complete lack of free time to work on it and I want it to be comprehensive, so it probably won't make it into 0.45 if that gets released soon (after all translators need time to do their part too).
Documentation-wise in general... if you have a question that isn't answered by our tutorials, you can always check to see if there is an explanation of X feature or tool at: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/index.php
Information about masks appears to be at: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/ch11s02.html
My guess is that the masking behavior will make more sense once you read that, again I hope this was what you needed to know. :)

Yes, it would have worked the same in 0.44... but the latest and greatest inkscape is still the way to go in my opinion.

Is there a way to edit the clip object as well?
Is there a way to edit the clip object as well?
I would imagine you have to unset it. That was another thing (now you mention it) that Freehand could handle - you could do just that and the children would remain clipped, hiding or showing more or less as you moved the parent's outline about.
I will await illumination :D

Unfortunately you do have to release the clippath to edit it. We wanted to do editing while objects are clipped when the feature was initially added, but it was quite a bit more work (given our current infrastructure) and no one has volunteered for it.
This is something the developers and users would like to see and it will probably be added eventually, but until someone steps up or volunteers to code this I wouldn't count on it anytime soon. If anyone reading this is interested in taking this task on, please either drop in the irc or jabber channel or drop a message on our developer mailing list.

This didnt work with 0.44 i dont hink, but does with SVN...
Draw the path you want to use as a clip Clone it. use the clone to clip the group (so you get your paste inside type thing) edit the original and the cloned clippath will update too.
for added organisation, stick all the clip paths on a layer, turn it invisible when your done.

Sweet. Good one. Works on 0.44+devel (autopackage) Thanks!

Hi folks,
I have to create a paper bulletin for a local social club, 16 pages plus 4 for the cover. They want print it in a farm, not with pc-based printers . They need full color images and text on every page, then a CMYK output is needed.
I need a little help : can I use Inkscape or do you think scribus is better ? Is Inkscape easy to use with cmyk output, agfa preprinter and other, as other software do (Freehand, Illustrator and so on) ?

Scribus is probably better on these counts.
