We have node sculpting and the tweak tool, what I think would be a great companion to these would be something like Blender's Lattice modifier, where you can take a complex shape and sort of "cage" it with a simpler shape, and use the simpler shape to proportionally "sculpt" the more complex one by moving the nodes in the simple shape, sort of like using the nodes of a simple bezier curve as handles to control the overall shape of a more complex multi-node curve.
...it's just a thought.

If anyone has suggestions for improving Inkscape or feature requests, please go over to launchpad and use the form there:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+filebug
It is a bit confusing that feature requests are created by "reporting a bug" but that is how you do it, just set the importance to "wishlist"
As well, please take the time to search for an existing request or bug with the same issue: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/
Thanks,

We are already working towards that goal! At the moment, a group of French students has looked into something similar (shaping an object by an envelope around it). Perhaps this year's GSoC will end up with a 'lattice modifier'.
