canvas display vs other viewers (0.92pre2 ?)
Hi Friends, Sorry for all the messages today. Even if I'm not much of an artist, just using this dev version for the contest, allows me to have a personal experience with all the various toys and issues. So I can be ready to help to answer questions from other users. I was having a little bit of a problem using a filter, and never did figure out why it looks differently on a larger object than on a smaller one. Eventually I just tweaked the filter on the larger one. But then I made a PNG export, and the filter looks much better through the Windows Photo Viewer (Windows 7). Compare

The first one is what I see in Inkscape. First, notice in the smaller object where the filter looks a little better than on the larger one. (I mean the lavendar colored strokes with Raised Border filter). But mainly I'm curious about the difference between the Inkscape canvas and the Windows Viewer. See in the 2nd one, the filters are displayed in a much nicer way, at least imo. So I know that different viewers have different abilities and support different features. But it seems to me like Inkscape should be having the most ideal display. What can the reason for this be? I have not noticed this much of a difference in previous versions. Ooohh -- I just learned from a previous question about the dpi being different in 0.92. Could that explain this different display? Is there some other place besides Export PNG, where I need to change the dpi? Something in Inkscape Prefs maybe?

- What are your settings for the filter render quality in Inkscape? See Edit -> Preferences -> Render -> Effect Quality ? There's always a trade-off between being able to work fast, and being able to have an optimal preview. Good render quality slows Inkscape down. (I don't know what the default value is, but it's probably not 'best').

I already had my threads set to 8 (in case that matters). They had originally been on Average for both (Gaussian and filter display). And that has always been adequate for me. I switched both to Best and restarted Inkscape. No significant change :-( A tiny improvement, but not nearly as good as the display in 0.91.
If there is a better way to show this, let me know, and I'll make up some more helpful screenshots. Or any other kind of documentation.

- If you do have both versions installed, I'd assume that these could be useful: - an svg file with the filter - two screenshots, one from 0.91 and one from 0.92pre2, both at same zoom level - maybe a png export of same area
But this is for the devs now ;-)
