Hi,
I am a completely new user and I installed inkscape mainly to manipulate postscript files. The installation was done with inkscape-0.42.2.x86.package on suse 9.0. My problem is that I can't seem to be able to import .ps files doing "File -> Import " and setting the filter to "All files". Inkscape tells me that it is unable to load the (.ps) file I choose.
Here are the error messages I get : - when starting inkscape inkscape: /usr/bin/../lib/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by inkscape) although pkg-config and libpng12-config are able to find a version :
pkg-config --modversion libpng12
1.2.5
libpng12-config --version
1.2.5
- when trying to import a ps file /[...]/blah.ps:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found %!PS-Adobe-2.0 EPSF-1.2 ^
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, inkscape is a very powerfull graphic editor, but it can't import ps and eps files, I think it's due to the copyright covering the Ps Adobe format :-)

Actually there's no issues with copyright, it's just that no one's implemented the right code in Inkscape yet.
However, here's a technique I worked out last weekend: Use pstopdf (or another ps->pdf converter) to convert it to a PDF, then load it into Scribus and save as SVG. You can then load it into Inkscape. However, there will be some losses; for example, the text gets converted into curves so becomes non-editable. :-/
We've talked to the Scribus developers to hopefully work out a simpler and superior conversion process when using scribus with inkscape to do this. Others have also been looking into other EPS/PS/PDF conversion tools to see what else can be done. There's a huge amount of discussion about this lately; I'm hopeful some good solutions come as a result.

No, is because nobody wrote yet an Inkscape import filter. Look at pstoedit for an application able to convert from postscript to SVG: http://www.pstoedit.net/pstoedit

I'm so sorry but I'm not agree with you in this. I can import eps and ps and modify it with inkscape. It's a problem of the dependency. I think that Inkscape needs pstoedit to import eps and ps.

Pd ps, eps and pdf (till 5 I think) is a open format, although it was developed by Adobe

ok, about copyright and open format we are talking about two different things.
Anyway I googlized pstoedit (http://www.pstoedit.net/pstoedit) and found an usefull utility to convert eps to svg, not a shell or a dll file or a filter to import eps into InkScape,
Is it the thrue ?

Hi, inkscape is a very powerfull graphic editor, but it can't import ps and eps files,
I'm a little concerned about some of the claims people have been making on behalf of Inkscape. I am worried some of the claims are misleading and people may be disappointed when things do not "Just Work" when they try out Inkscape.
Inkscape does not natively support Poscript (PS) or Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) however Inkscape can be made to support more formats with the help from a variety of third party scripts and plugins. (I am not the best one to ask on how to set it all up though.)
I think it's due to the copyright covering the Ps Adobe format :-)
That has nothing to do with it. Postscript is an open standard, heck it is a Turing complete programming language but that is another story.
