Hi there,
anybody facing the same problem? As I can't log in to scourceforge (" Logins to SourceForge.net are currently disabled."), I thought that I'd ask if someone has an idea what could be wrong:
When I try to start inkscape 0.44 it crashes with the following message (Inkscape 0.43 works ok):
************************************************************************
*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x086143b0 ***
Emergency save activated! Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now. If you can reproduce this crash, please file a bug at www.inkscape.org with a detailed description of the steps leading to the crash, so we
can fix it.
************************************************************************
This happens no matter if I build from scratch, use an autopackage or a binary from linux packages.
Here'a gdb backtrace:

You might want to copy some of what I wrote on this in inkscape.org/faq.php.

I didn't find anything there on the topic of this crash.
Anyway, I wonder why do we have two FAQs? Can't we remove the php one in favor of the wiki one, which is bigger and more up to date?

Grep for gentoo

Sure, if the wiki one includes everything the php one has.

As I recall the PHP page was setup to provide a safe fixed page since the early wikis didn't have enough (any) security to discourage vandalism (the low barrier to entry was in the hope that more people would contribute).
What we really need is a page that points to whatever the current FAQ is: http://www.inkscape.org/faq/ Since we've gone through about 3 different Wiki layouts already and may well have other changes in future then having stable fixed pointers to the most important pages will make things easier to find and link to.
The same idea could apply for the download page: http://www.inkscape.org/download/ (I think I was planning on filing a request to this end but I dont think I've done it yet.)
Rather than taking down the old page and missing out on valuable google juice/good linkage I would encourage you to simply add a big note at the top of the page to indicate The following page is no longer updated and the latest version can always be found at http://www.inkscape.org/faq/

Hmm, as I wrote, building it by myself doesn't work here, tested it once more a few minutes ago. Maybe there is some kind of ./configure magic that I didn't do? I didn't get any errors...
But after a while of searching I found a binary that works here so far at http://www.slacky.it/
btw, the link on the Inkscape Homepage to the bz2 tarball points to the 0.43 version, where should I report that?

Did you recompile the C++ libraries? That is the solution that most typically works for people 90% of the time.

Which link? All the ones I checked looked correct...

I've just posted an inkscape tutorial on my blog:
http://simarilius.wordpress.com/
Its an adaption of a very cool fireworks tutorial from http://www.brownbatterystudios.com/ so kudos to them for the technique.
Cheers

Wow, that's nicely done. :-) Have you talked with ScislaC about including that in inkscape 0.45?
Bryce
Hi!
Could you post it to www.inkscapeforums.com too, in the "showcase" section?
Thanks!

Yes I did, without success. But after reinstalling my gcc everything works ok now.

It was this one, must have been corrected in the meantime: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/inkscape/inkscape-0.44.tar.bz2?download
Thank you!

Yeah, I discovered that myself yesterday and fixed it. It was only on the German version.

Maybe a link to the webmaster would be useful, or something like "report broken links here". Or is there one, that I didn't find?

I guess the SF bugtracker should be used for that purpose - or just mention it here like you did :)

A slight side issue... has there been any progress in getting the autopackage version to not fail on a cairo dependency?

Ooops sorry, libXfixes (thinking of another program entirely!)

Ack! Cairo AND libXfixes

There's a cairo dep too. Oy! No tangible progress, though I have worked with it some. I don't work tomorrow, maybe we'll get lucky. :-)
