I am evaluating dxf input...
found this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/293940
and can find the dxf_import files mentioned in the install
but there is no .dxf option in the import file formats list...
is anyone else doing that successfully?

If you are running 0.46 stable release, then see the comment at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/293940/comments/5 You will need the two files dxf_input.py and dxf_input_46stable.inx. The .inx format has changed since the release of 0.46, which is why the extension is not available on your menu.
